Gingles Cemetery: Gingles Cemetery is one of the oldest
pioneer cemeteries in Benton County, Oregon. Many of the interned
came across the Oregon Trail and were an important part of the settlement
of the Willamette Valley. The oldest known grave is of a “Mr. Miller”
who died coming over the Oregon Trail in 1850. Mr. Miller was the
brother in law of James Gingles.
Located on nearly one acre, the cemetery was willed to
the Albany School District in 1886 by James Gingles. The cemetery
started as a family plot for the Gingles and the Millers, (Gingles 1st
wife was Sarah Miller), and became a community cemetery as a matter of
accommodation.
James Gingles (1819-1889) served as Benton County Commissioner
for several terms and was a member of The Oregon House Of Representatives,
four terms in the 1860’s and 1870’s.
Intended as a peaceful final resting place
this beautiful cemetery is now close to ruins. It is in desperate
need of restoration and repair. Researchers have tried to interest
historical societies, State, City, & County governments in cleaning,
repairing, and maintaining this important historical landmark to no avail.
The Albany School District has neglected the cemetery for over sixty years,
with the exception of one clean- up effort in 1987 by the boy scouts and
South Albany High School students.
On a recent visit to the cemetery we found that it is
nearly impossible to navigate due to thick vines and brush.
