Congratulations with your WWW site!! I looked at it today and printed your articles, but have not so much time to look at all now. I am very interested in reading all about the civil right movements. I saw you have a whole list of interesting groups! Very very good! I had to laugh at the comments about your daughter Gabriella, that she doesn't eat in McDonalds and doesn't play with Barbie dolls. I think, you have another activist in your family...

Greetings from Tomas and Marianne in Sweden! I looked in as number 21 on your homepage today, and, man, what a page you created! The pictures of you are very good, and the collection of links also. You have so much interesting information there that I've only been able to browse through a small percentage of it today. I'll sure be back many times.

It may not be perfect, but nowhere in the world, bar none, can we exercise our God-given inalienable rights as we can here. Hi, Just read your articles and the reality, though depressing, has one and a definitely consoling factor, that there is someone willing to write what one perceives without mincing words. I think that the American "corporate" and "elite" attitudes are spreading in the western hemisphere.
Anyway, I am glad that I am able to confirm my thoughts with your articles. Thanks.

Hi. I'm a proud Lithuanian (100%, though 3rd generation here). My aunt's cousin in Vilnius sent her a tapestry last year. I have it framed in my front hall. There is a poem on it. The first words look like this: Lietuva tevyne musu tu didvyriu zeme...
She thinks it is the national anthem. We have tried to translate it with a dictionary, but did a sloppy job of it. Any clue which poem this is?

God bless you. I was born here, love this country, and have come to the same conclusions as you. It's a tough problem - self perpetuating I think. Democracy depends upon an informed and literate populace. It also depends upon involvement and willingness to question authority. Our people have become soft, undereducated, perpetually stressed to just make ends meet, and over-willing to give away their personal power to charismatic opinion leaders. I don't know what to do about it. I hope what you're doing will get some people thinking. Good luck. Hope the thought police keep their distance. RL.

I really enjoyed reading your articles. My girlfriend grew up in Poland under the communist regime and was active in Solidarity in the late '70s and early '80s. She told me of the state repression during those years.
After coming to Australia, she has also come to know the injustice of consumerist, debt-ridden, wage-slave culture. Even though she hates communism, she said no one starved (as far as she knew...) during the communist rule.
Australian cities still retain some of their liveability, but I feel that they are following their American counterparts into smog-filled oblivion... I hope people wake up here too! (Ozzies can also be politically apathetic.)
Keep up the work Valdas. You and your family are something special!! I will have to read some more of your site later.

I am a graduate student at Tokai University Graduate School in Japan. Now, I participate the Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI) at the University of Illinois at Chicago in U.S. In this course, I am learning the Lithuanian Language and some modern (Contemporary) history of the Baltic states. I am very interested in the social democracy in a small state. Because there are a lot of studies about the social democracy in major countries, for instance, the SDP in Deutsche, Labour party of Russian Empire and so on. I don't think that the socialism and communism was dead in Soviet's collapse. These facts signify that fail of the Stalin's doctrine. But I don't have a sovereignty of Marxism (incl. socialism and communism).
...Well, hope for your kindly and friendly comment!!

Found your homepage while searching for a Lithuanian e-mail penpal. I visited Vilnius, Kaunas (and, of course, beautiful Trakai) in Sept '94. Lithuania is beautiful, particularly the agricultural landscape.
Yes, I read very much of your writings: you are a handsome couple; the little girl is lovely. I can't even spell 'transcendental art' but I find it to be beautiful!
I enjoyed the art and poetry and consider it an honor to have 'met' you.
Sincerely, Hilton Bowers

I was very impressed by the culture amassed in these pages. However, I was a bit disappointed by the fact that the Lithuanian poetry wasn't presented in its original language. You see, although I am not Lithuanian, I know many Lithuanian immigrants who, I believe, would enjoy reading their homeland's authors in the original language. Just a thought...

Throughout his lithuanian and russian textes, I am trying to seize the traditional images of his nation, and compare him with other Lithuanian poets. I translate some of his poems into French and Dutch I am trying to meet people who do the same research, as well as getting to know different kinds of curious aspects about him. If You might be interested, then write me. I understand all the major European languages, the slavic ones include, and of course Lithuanian. Thank You.

You must get some interesting comments on your view of things. Admittedly, 'Democracy' is full of holes, as well as communism. Have you found an ideal governmental system yet? One exists today. It is worldwide and encompasses all races and classes of people. Not many folks really understand it, quite a minority actually. Communism and Democracy, Christendom and Voodooism, indees all systems on this planet have ridiculed it's adherents. But it continues to grow stronger.

Thank you for reminding me of our absoulutly unfair and unjust system. Your commentary on American life is in many ways an acurate portral, unfortunatly many Americans refuse to recognize the reality of our situation here. I am going to pass this address onto many others here at the University on Montana, including a group that I belong to called Friends of the Western Buddhist Order. We are very involved spiritualy as well as physically and emotionaly in current issues concerning American and World Life.
I am a born and raised Missouri girl, but a went to Holland for a year form 1992-1993. While living there and basically living my life like any other Dutch person my eyes came open to the horrible conditions in the Unitid States. Before I ignorantly believed that America, being the richest nation on Earth, provided as much as it could for those living near or in poverty. While living in Euroupe I realized that we do practicly nothing to prevent poverty, here or any where else. The poverty rate in Holland is practicly non-existent, everyone who wants help is provided for. Here it is a crime to be poor. I hope that through grassroots organizing, some of this country will be able to realize how their lives can change and that they are actually not happy just sitting in front of their T.V.'s. My hope is that through a raised awareness, our society will some day be able to flourish. I fear though that the only way for Americans come to the realization that their life is boring and lacks substance, is for something trajic to happen. An envation of the Unitid States, a nuclear bomb explotion. Dispite the fact that I try not to harm anyone including others on this planet, I feel that our salvation might lie in mass suffering for a new generation to wake up and face the harsh realities facing them, haughting them now. Good Luck in your endevours! Thanks for letting me go off and share with you an American student's point of view.

The US may not be the best country in your eyes, but your also only mentioning the bad parts. You shouldn't forget that this isn't a caste society, even those that are born homeless could one day become president. I know it doesn't happen often, but the opportunity to become one those terrible oppressers is a dream that keeps this nation moving! You also keep mentioning that our welfare system is so terrible, but why should a poor woman sit at home and collect a check form the government just for having children? The children should be supported by their local community, not the Federal Government! You were wrong on one other count, while a college education is becoming harder to achieve for the middle class, it is available for almost everyone living below the poverty line. I have to agree with you that this country isn't perfect, I think that before you start judging the US for what you view as evil-ness, you should really become familiar with our history. You think that we spend too much money on the military, but it's saved us enough times that it's worth it. Besides the entire world sponges off the American Army in many ways. The US also helps many other countries that should be able to take care of themselves. Look at your precious Europe, who was it that saved them in WWII? I belvieve it was the US!! If you want to see the real reason for our high taxes take a look at the fiancial records of that war. If you do you'll see that out of all the money that was lent to Europe for the war and the restoration only Finland payed us back! The American culture is not as lost as many people seem to think! You just look for it in all the wrong places. American sulture isn't in the big cities, it's in the small towns (especially in the mid-west, the South, and the West). If you spent any time in a true rural town in any of these areas you would find a very rich culture that can never be matched in any other country in the world. The biggest difference is that the American culture is not flaunted. We may appear to be a social wasteland, but at least we still have our pride! Besides think about where most great discoveries originate. The US places more stress on making things easier. Remember: Work smarter not harder!

A poet who is half Lithuanian (though adopted with my twin brother in Knox, Indiana, USA) I was thrilled to find this page. I only wish I knew how to read it. Thank you for creating it. Have a Nice Holiday Season.
Sincerely,
Cynthia. a.k.a. Mountain poet
