EMAIL LIST INFO &
NETIQUETTE GUIDELINES
These are some of the basic rules the UUA insists upon for participation on their email lists. They are basic enough that local UU lists use the same rules.
A "list" is the technical term for something similar to a round robin letter that is sent to a "List of email addresses" simultaneously rather than serially. There are four local lists:
|
UU-Chat is interested in conversations, opinions about the election, politics, philosophy, silliness, and banter. Members and Friends are welcome on this unmoderated list.
UU-Share is an online Cares and Concerns circle.
UU-News is exclusively for news and announcements relating to the local UU church. Members and Friends are welcome. It is a moderated list.
BIZ-UU is for church Board business. Members and Board Members may participate on this list. |
|
If you join the UU-Chat or UU-Share lists, a subscription to the UU-News list comes with it. "Chat" can bring in 5-8 messages a day, "News" will bring 1-2 messages a week, Share has no track record yet, Biz goes in spurts as issues dictate.
|
To join a local list,
send your request and real name to the webster .

GENERAL NETIQUETTE - Guidelines for participation on a UU List-serv
Don't...
* Monopolize the list
* Use inflammatory language * Criticize persons or share private messages on the list without the writer's permission
* Post chain letters, petitions, or virus warnings
* Post other people's opinions or websites
* Preach ("you are wrong and I am right"), forcing your views on others
* Offer unsolicited advice (even when it's asked for, beware the power dynamic: are you setting yourself up as having authority over the asker?) Instead, offer information or suggestions.
Do...
* Treat with respect the purposes of the list, its members, and the values of UUism
* Write your messages mindfully: see Writing as Practice
* Speak from your experience
* Include only the relevant part of the original message rather than the whole message when you reply
* Sign your name (some folks can't see the headers)
* Nod (only) when you have nothing else to add to the discussion
* Respond to the strongest of the arguments in opposition, not the weakest
* Direct commentary about the administration of the list to the listmanager
* Above all, remember: we are all in it together (Interbeing). We need to treat each other gently and in a spirit of compassion
* The local lists are public forums, not private or personal ones. The list administrators are within their rights to suspend or remove the privilege of participating on this list from any member whose behavior continues to be offensive. The listmanagers determine what is offensive enough to require sanctions.
