Oregon may create Marine Reserve - Daily Astorian
Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber has lent his support to a long-term plan for creating a system of marine reserves in the states ocean waters. In a letter to the Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Council, which has studied marine reserves since July 2000 and made a recommendation to the governor in August, Kitzhaber said, Oregonians overwhelmingly support marine conservation and are vitally interested in protecting important marine habitats and resources along our coast.

Beachhead defense - Eugene Register-Guard

Surfrider in Action: OPAC Report
On August 16 the Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Council approved a report and recommendation to the Governor on marine reserves. That report and recommendation is posted on the OPAC website at http://oregonocean.org.
A couple of notable 11th hour amendments to the recommendation included: some language that ensures that after a 3-5 year process to set up some reserves; language that requires water quality testing as a part of marine reserves research and monitoring (a Surfrider Foundation proposed amendment and the only amendment to pass unanimously!); a state park amendment that enables Parks to establish some reserves adjacent to state parks (connecting headlands, rocky intertidal areas, sub tidal reefs, and offshore rocks).

More Surfrider and Coastal Issues in the News
Another story related to the water quality issues in Newport. This one is directly related to some of the septic issues that we discussed with Oregon Health Division at the BEACH Act (ocean water quality) meeting on Monday:
This article just came out in the Tillamook Headlight Herald. Oregon Shores had a spit hike on Bayocean Spit and we discussed some of the potential threats present, past, and in the future, as well as some potential remedies. This place without a doubt is a special place. Remote and beautiful! I highly recommend a hike out there. Special Thanks to Paul Komar for his book from which I got most of my info!

NOTE:
This event has been rescheduled and will no longer take place on August 24th!
Hi folks, It's that time again. Time for another clean up of our adopted section of Highway 101 north of Newport. This time we are going to have a pot luck BBQ afterwards! Here's the plan:
We will meet at the Moolack Beach parking area on Saturday, September 14th@ 11 AM. Note this is 1 hour earlier than past clean ups. Bring your gloves and appropriate clothing. The clean up should take a couple hours.
BBQ will be at my place after the cleanup. We will provide the coals, a fair bit of salmon and salad. You should bring something to drink and a dish to share. Best to bring things that won't need too much prep like munchies, bread, desert, thing that just need to warmed up, or thrown on the grill, etc.

Newport News Times Reports on Oregon Water Quality
Check out the Newport newspaper's report on local water quality tests:
http://www.newportnewstimes.com/nt_news/general/nt_news-18.html#TopOfPage
"The water quality of the Pacific Ocean off Lincoln County, in terms of the presence of e. coli and fecal coliform bacteria, has varied greatly in the past three years, according to Phil Barbour, a research assistant at Oregon State University and a volunteer with the Surfriders Foundation.Barbour and P.J. Colson have been testing the water off the central coast each month for nearly three years. In many instances, they found no contamination at all. In other cases, they found fairly high levels. They have found that the two worst areas are Newport's Nye Beach, "right below the sewer plant," and Otter Rock, "near the stairs," Barbour said. Each area has shown occasional high levels of both bacteria. The other four areas tested regularly - the Otter Rock tidepools below the Inn at Otter Crest, Agate Beach against Yaquina Head, South Beach, and Johns Point, just north of Moolack Shores, have consistently shown low levels of the two bacteria..."

Pacific Northwest Surfrider Chapters Training Conference
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to take a second to thank all of those who came and participated in the conference. Especially those of you who had 5+ hour drives. Great commitment! It was a great weekend and I'm sure we all learned alot.
Thanks to Mark Rauscher and Kevin Ranker from National for coming to PC and working with us. I was so stoked to see the number of chapters represented this year.
By next year we should have a few more official chapters in Tofino, Portland and Lincoln city. It is amazing to see how quickly we are growing. I think that conferences like this last weekend's are important in our growth as volunteers and chapters as a whole. Thanks for sitting in doors most of the day while the sun was shining. You all demonstrated great will power. I hope to see you all again real soon. Keep up the great work.
Sincerely,
Billy Jack Hagerman Chairman, Oregon State Chapter
