Oct. 13 Adopt-A-Highway Beach Cleanup CANCELED

Keepers of the coast,

Due to unforeseen problems and this weekends forecast we have decided to postpone the Adopt A Highway clean up until a later date. Sorry for the late notice, but sometimes that's the way it goes. Besides, I don't think anyone wants to be trying to grab trash in gail winds. Thanks to all of you who showed up to the Portland meeting last Monday.  I will send out an email when we have decided on another date for the clean up. Until then try to stay positive through the rain and I hope to see you soon.

Oregon is No Beach Bum!

The Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) is the Surfrider Foundation's most visible and successful program to date nationally. BWTF was established with the following objectives:
The Oregon Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is looking for more volunteers to help raise awareness about the need for a comprehensive beach water quality monitoring program along the Oregon coast. Oregon is one of only three coastal states without  regular ocean water testing. With Oregon's reputation for protecting it's natural resources you would think this would be a no brainer. The DEQ is already showing interest in our program and is actually helping us with materials. What we need now is more volunteers that want to make a difference by taking the water samples. This is your chance to give back to the ocean after all  the joy it has given you. If you live on the coast or are there on a regular basis you can help. You do however have to be willing to do this on a regular basis as the samples must be taken each month. We are asking for a one year commitment from each volunteer. Surfrider is planning to give all volunteers  training on how the testing needs to be done and will supply volunteers with the materials needed to do it. If you are interested in getting involved please give me a call or email. This project is very important and you can help make it a success.

August 18th Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the Pacific City meeting, held August 18, 2001 are available HERE.

Surfrider Summer Meeting Schedule

We have had quite a busy summer, but there is still alot to be done. Volunteers have been stepping up to start taking samples for our Blue Water Task Force so we need to get popping. Now is a good time for those of you who frequent the coast regularly to get involved with our biggest project. All that is needed is people to take samples of ocean water on a regular basis. How easy is that?

I would like to see a real show of our members and try and touch base with those of you I have been emailing for so long, but haven't had the opportunity to meet in person. These meetings are for everyone; surfers, kayakers, sailors etc... All you have to do is love the ocean. These meetings are great opportunities if you want to get involved or if you are merely curious about what we do.

For more information please contact: Billy Hagerman at 503-357-1111 or hagerm@ihpc.net

Notes from the 2001 Pacific NW Training Conference

Tina's notes from the 2001 Pacific Northwest Chapter Activist Training Conference, held April 28-29, 2001 are available HERE.

2001 Northwest Grassroots Training Conference

On April 28 & 29, 2001, the Surfrider Foundation will conduct the "2001 Pacific Northwest Chapter Activists Training Conference" in Westport, Washington. The conference will take place at the Chateau Westport, located at 710 West Hancock (off Forest) in Westport. To make reservations please contact the Chateau Westport at (800) 255-9101 or (360) 268-9101. Please mention you're with the Surfrider Foundation.

This year's conference format will build on the last two year's of grassroots training by incorporating new outreach techniques in coordination with chapter member outreach experiences. The focus of the conference will be regional chapter organizational capacity building and environmental program outreach assistance training. The second day will focus heavily on grass roots organizing, community outreach and education regarding the need for greater nearshore and marine conservation through marine protected areas.

Attendees will work as a group to develop a regional chapter outreach campaign that addresses the growing environmental concerns and future growth opportunities for chapter development. We would like to create this plan for future regional growth and create feedback mechanisms so this plan stays vital, flexible and in tune with changing circumstance. This campaign will be implemented with assistance provided by Surfrider Foundation National, with additional presentations by Mike Sato, North Sound Director, People for Puget Sound and Kevin Ranker, Executive Director, Friends of the San Juans.

Saturday night join Surfrider for a special presentation by Surfing journalist/ legend (author of The Book of Waves and Stoked, a History of Surfing Culture and past editor for Surfer and Surfing) Drew Kampion and 1970's Plastic Fantastic Shaping guru Dan Calohan. They will be giving a presentation and slide show of their favorite photos and stories of waves, the beauty of the ocean and surfing during the last three decades.

One of the most important aspects of the Chapter Activist Training Conference is that it provides an opportunity to meet, share and discuss chapter issues with fellow activists. This in combination with the hands-on training is a very valuable tool in learning how to effectively utilize your volunteer resources.

Surfrider Foundation National sees a fantastic opportunity for outreach in the Pacific Northwest Region in the next few years. We need your help and assistance to make it happen. That's why it's extremely important that you attend this year s conference.

If you have any questions please contact me at (949) 492-8170 or emazzarella@surfrider.org .

Letter writing campaign: State Parks aquisition of Frankport/Sisters Rock

Oregon Surfrider is urging the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department to aquire the area known as Frankport and Sisters Rock north of Gold Beach as a new State Park. It has been used by the public for at least 60 years and and currently privately owned and could be closed to the public. It is one of Oregon's "special places", with its beach, rock outcropping, abundant sea life, views, and surfing potential.

Oregon Surfrider has written an open letter to the head of the Oregon Parks Dept, as well as the property owners, Oregon's Governor, and Oregon's State and Federal Congressmen.

Please read Surfrider's letter to Oregon Parks Dept here, and write your own (or modify ours) and send it to:
