Surf Movie Fundraiser scheduled August 30, 2000
Good news! The "September Sessions" Oregon Surfrider Foundation fundraiser is still on. We had to change the date to AUG. 30th due to schedule conflict, but all is well. For those of you who are hearing about this for the first time Surfrider Foundation will be having a fundraiser at All Surf Industry Surf shop in Portland on Aug. 30th at 7:30pm. We will be showing Taylor Steele's new movie "September Sessions" and "Thicker Than Water". Admission will be a $5.00 donation. That's right, two movies for the price of one! All Surf Industry is located at 532 SE Clay in Portland. If you have any questions give me a call or email me at hsurfrider@aol.com. All Surf has been super supportive of Oregon Surfrider Foundation and is being very generous by helping us out with this event. Stop by and say hi to Mark at All Surf and thank him for repeatedly opening his doors to us. Another thanks goes out to Jimmy Maks in Portland for hosting our last meeting. They gave us their downstairs area and their big screen to view a surf flick after the meeting. Jimmy Maks has good food and are really stoked on Surfrider so check them out.
Thanks for everyone's hard work and hopefully I will see you soon. For the Ocean, Billy Hagerman Oregon Surfrider Foundation 503-531-7705

EPA Dioxin Report and the Columbia Channel Deepening
Peter Huhtala, Columbia Deepening Opposition Group writes:
This Friday EPA will release a long-awaited report on the distribution and effects of dioxin compounds. The report reveals that these substances are 10 times more dangerous than EPA believed in 1994. They are carcinogens with no safe exposure level.
Dioxins and the related furans sorb to sediment and are found throughout the Lower Columbia River. The river is considered "water quality limited" partly due to the presence of these nefarious chemicals. The release of dioxins into the river is still permitted within limits, but the EPA report indicates non-point sources, such as river sediment, are likely responsible for most current dioxin distribution. One concern with the channel deepening plan (and also with some maintenance dredging practices) is that dioxins in disturbed sediment will add to the current load in the river system. The acts of dredging and blasting stir up sediments; discharge into the flow lane redistributes even more toxins. Imagine also the impact of dumping millions of tons of dioxin-laced sediment in the near-shore ocean.
Events are planned in 26 states on Friday to call attention to the dioxin crisis. We participated in a full-page ad in the New York Times Monday. For your information, I'll paste a press release CDOG is issuing related to the dioxin report. The full report can be found at http://www.chej.org/.
Here is the full press release.

Re: Pacific Northwest Chapter Activist Training Conference
On May 13, 2000 the Surfrider Foundation will conduct the 2000 Pacific Northwest Chapter Activist Training Conference in Pacific City, Oregon. The conference will take place at the Kiwanda Senior Community Center in Pacific City.
This year's conference format will build on last year's training by incorporating new outreach activism techniques and hands on program implementation training. We will focus this conference on two main areas; Chapter Organizational Assistance and Environmental Program Outreach.
By attending the conference this year you will learn proven grassroots activism techniques in the following areas; increasing turnout for your chapter meetings, planning an agenda that accomplishes your chapter goals, increasing media presence at your events and hands-on training on implementing the Beachscape coastal mapping and "New" Respect the Beach programs.
One of the most important aspects of the Chapter Training Conferences is that it provides an opportunity to meet, share and discuss chapter issues with fellow activists. This in combination with the hands on training is a very valuable tool in learning how to effectively and efficiently utilize your volunteer resources.
Listen to some of the comments from the 2000 Northern California Chapter Training Conferences held in March. "The opening exercise was extremely helpful and effective", "The workshop/hypothetical campaign was an effective example to educate and highlight strategies. Also the Beachscape presentation introduced me to a very critical and impacting project", "Good mix of breakout group work and lecture presentation".
We will follow the chapter conference with a beach rally and clean water paddle at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City (a half mile down the road). At 7PM the Oregon Chapter has organized a "Surf Stomp" back at the Kiwanda Center with a surf movie (Loose Change), live music and a raffle.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there. If you have any questions please contact me at (949) 492-8170 or emazzarella@Surfrider.org. A big thank you to the Oregon Chapter who offered to host this year's conference! For lodging information contact the Oregon Chapter.

Members of Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition will stage three simultaneous protests along the coast on Aug. 14 from 10 am to noon, at Yaquina Head (north end of Newport), Cape Perpetua (just south of Yachats), and Oregon Dunes Overlook (midway between Florence and Reedsport). Please join us; bring a sign if you can. Agenda for the meeting:
We need to send an irrefutable message to the Forest Service, the BLM, the Congress, and the President that industrial strength recreation is not an acceptable use of America's public lands. Get involved in your local protest. For more information contact Wild Wilderness.
