This annual retreat was last weekend, it was fantastically successful. There were new faces from Bend and Portland. We set forth several motions regarding position statements regarding: driving on the beach, camping on the beach in front of state parks, and the National Forest Fee Deconstruction Project.
We are trying to identify beach access areas, etc. to record use in the event the area is ever in jeapardy of being closed to public access. Please let Markus @ portlandsurfrider@hotmail.com or Dave @ bigwvdave@hotmail.com know if you have any areas you would like recorded for protection.
We are in need of interns who are interested in looking through DEQ files for overflow spills from businesses on the coast. This will help us identify areas where there is dumping straight into the ocean – so we can include these areas for water quality testing – by us and the state. Interested, know interested students, or you have a school you can post the intern request at? Contact Dave at bigwvdave@hotmail.com.
We have many areas we are testing along the South and Central coast. Eleven of the 24 beaches we have tested have been polluted. We are lacking testing locations on the Northern coast – Manzanita up to Seaside. We are currently looking for labs along the Northern Oregon coast where we can bring samples from Northern testing sites. We are going to get a list of all of the middle and high schools along the coast, we need volunteers to call the schools and talk with the science teachers if they have labs and if they are interested in having their labs reactivated. We have funding.
Andi can take Tillamook and Nestucca middle school. We need from Manzanita, North. Please contact Dave at bigwvdave@hotmail.com if you are interested.
In 2000, Gov Kitzhaber asked the state to look at the necessity of Marine Reserves and to identify potential areas. We were instrumental in gathering data for potential sites. The next step is a five year process of implementation. Marine Reserves are ‘no take’ areas, like a Wilderness preserve. A Marine Protected Area is not necessarily a marine reserve. We are planning to present coastal workshops with Oregon Shores, to help educate the coastal community and interested folks on marine protected areas. We need volunteers to help set up the workshops, etc. These will be in the Spring. If you are interested, please contact Dave at bigwvdave@hotmail.com.
Beach clean up
Sand Castle Building contest
Rally and paddle out with expression session
We will need volunteers: at the booth, to help with the clean up, and to paddle out to make a statement about our lack of Water quality testing in Oregon.
We also need volunteers to help gather donations from the community for contest prizes, raffle items, etc. We will begin gathering volunteers for the booth and clean up a the March meeting, or contact Tina at tiamotina@cs.com . If you are interested in gathering donations, please contact Markus at portlandsurfrider@hotmail.com.
Darrell’s brainchild. It collects donations for our BWTF program. We need volunteers to get jars and apply stickers. We need folks to find places to put the jars and be responsible for them. It is good to glue the jars shut.
Sarah suggests: Quantify. Say, "This is how much we want to get to."
To help volunteer for this, please contact Markus at portlandsurfrider@hotmail.com .
Westport, WA. 22nd – 23rd March, 2003. All events will happen at the Islander Hotel.
OP is underwriting the entire event. There will be music. Raffle. Shortboard, Longboard, Men, and Women’s contests. No Tandem, no Menehune. Dan Callahan (plastic fantastic), Sonny Owens, Randy Carmen, and more celebrity judges. It is a really good time, and all proceeds go to Surfrider. Come and have some fun!! Go to www.Surfrider.org, then to Seattle, for more information or for an entry form.
This year the volunteer training conference will be in Washington: Westport or LaPush. It will be in mid - late May. What would members like to see as the training for this years conference? Email tina at tiamotina@cs.com if you have a suggestion for topics. The details will be finalized in the next three weeks. Suggestions: Public speaking. Ocean/beach safety.
