Welcome

Cyber-Home of

Rebecca Littman,

Music Librarian

Music librarian, singer of early music, bassoonist, stealth geek/cybrarian, webmaster, Macintosh Advocate, cat owner, and rabid -phile. My nickname, philebrarian, comes from the combination of being an x-phile and a librarian... phile -- brarian -- get it? got it? good.

My web page is a guide into the mind of a person who doesn't ever really want to grow up... I like to play, and I spend much of my time away from work talking to my friends in the cyberworld. Many of them are friends in real-life too, and this is an inexpensive way to stay in touch since most of them are on the west coast, 2000 miles from here, and phone bills can be pretty expensive. I am in the process of building pages about my many interests, so you'll see that ultimately I have taken on adult responsibilities... but I'm just a little twisted.

My best, and longest-term friend, Janet had her first baby on 4 November 1997. Her name is Rachel Whitney Mayes, and her picture is here.
I also have a photo of my mother's mom, Sarah (who was called Sadie). Take a look here to see her.

I am the webmaster for the first of what eventually grew to 8 groups that comprise the Cult of XXXgizzieXXX, or COG, a women's collective on the Internet that formed in 1996. At one point the various groups totaled nearly 60 members. We met on the Internet in the Newsgroup alt.tv.x-files and formed in appreciation of the irreverance and humor of a member of the Newsgroup known as XXXgizzieXXX. Our web page is fun and we try to make it a place that people like to spend time... please visit us.

In 1973 my family lived in Ealing, on the western edge of London. In the fall of 2002 I discovered that the people I went to school with have created a website. The school was Draytom Manor Grammar School, now Drayton Manor High School, which is on Drayton Bridge Road in Hanwell. To see the people that I was friends with (and pictures of me when I was 13) visit the website for the Intake Class of 1971, i.e. the kids who started at DMGS in 1971. The class of kids who graduated the year that I was there have a site too. They are the Intake Class of 1967. There are pictures from when we were in school and also from the reunions that they've had in the last couple of years. In April 2003 I went to New York to meet up with Karina who was my best friend that year, and Dave Hester who was in our class too (neithe of us remembers the other, but he's in the background of a couple of photos I took, so he was definitely there). Here's a photo of us at dinner in mid-town Manhattan.

There's more about who I am here, including links to my photo albums.

As a librarian, I am extremely concerned about Intellectual Freedom and censorship of the Internet. The Internet Community has banded together to present a unified opposition to the Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA). A few of the more than 30 or ganizations that have lent their name to the Citizens Internet Empowerment Coalition are: the American Library Association, America Online, the Association of Research Libraries, the American Association of Newspaper Editors, Netcom, Compuserve, the Freedom to Read Foundation, and Microsoft.

"Just as the strength of the Internet is chaos, so the strength of our liberty depends upon the chaos and cacophony of the unfettered speech the First Amendment protects."
--Sloviter, Chief Judge, United States Court of Appeals

On 26 June 1997, the United States Supreme Court, by unanimous vote, ruled the CDA unconstitutional.

The fight for Freedom of access on the Internet is by no means over, however. Libraries will continue to protect the rights of the public to access materials within their walls, and they will continue to encourage parents to be involved in with their children's internet use in the same way they are involved in choosing the books they read.

To learn more, please take a look at these web-sites and watch for the or the 24 Hours for Democracy logo for other sympathetic sites. If you find one that you think is particularly interesting, please let me know and I will add it.

I took the Pledge

credit must be given for the photo that I use in the background... it is by Kim Anderson, and is used without permission. I just love it so much, that I decided I'd chance the copyright police.
