Canada and Alaska in a tent
During July 13 through Aug 19, 1983 Betsy and I took a trip to
Canada and Alaska, here are our trip notes.
Jun 8, 1983 Neenah to Wakemup Bay, Vermilioin Lake, MN. Lots of
tired driving, small but nice campsite, beautiful lake, voracious
mosquitos, seaplane.
Jun 9 - Wakemup Bay, MN to Rusing River Prov. Park near Kenora. Got
tires fixed in International Falls, MN. Beautiful day, blue sky,
sun! Lake Of The Woods - rocky isles, pines, deep blue cold water.
Saw 2 white swans (whistling?) 2 moose females, so ugly, they're
beautiful. Rushing River PP, 192 sites wit only 10 filled,
waterfalls, islands, hiking camping on cliff overlooking Dogtooth
Lake. Hardly any bugs. Ran a fast 2 miles with such beautiful
scenery. Heather, lab tech from Winnipeg, Rick got a tick.
Jun 10 -Rushing River PP, ON to Birds Hill PP, Manitoba, outside
Winnipeg. Hiked Lower Falls Trail. Russing River to Blind Fold
Lake, used for logs years ago. Bear, vulture and deer. 44 along
West Hawk Lake. Beautful, lots of resorts, played at beach on Coddy
Lake. Yellow and black butterflies, then the plains and hot. Stayed
at Birds Hill outside Winnipeg. Field with trees, bushes and a lake
from a filled in swamp. Went swimming, cold. Lots of "townies".
Hot! Fresh walleye.
Jun 11 - Birds Hill PP, Manitoba to LaFleche, Sask. AM Walked
around Winnipeg. Old market square, little booth chip vendors.
Nobody awake until 10AM. Bought fresh pickerel, fruit, chips. Drove
on Hwy 2, Redcoat Trail through plains, hot and windy. Afternoon
thunderstorm, panoramic view. Wheat giving way to cattle. Prairie
dogs, magpies. Little towns, two grain elevators. Gas expensive.
Restaurant. Convoluted hills. Drove until 11:30PM in pouring rain
on gravel road. Betsy very crabby. Stayed at LaFleche Hotel $12.
Drank beer with Joe (owner) until closing.
Jun 12 - LaFleche Hotel, Sask. to Carseland - Wyndler PP, outside
Calgary, AB. Joe Presler - Yugoslavia, Zabreb 1968. Sister-in-law
in Limerick, Milw. Sit-down bar, foosball Felt like a guest in
somone's house. T-lowered sheets with lace showers! We're clean
kids. 8-bed hospital. Off again! Plains - cools and windy. On Bow
River, prairie dogs macaroni and cheese - Bronson style. Fresh
pickeral for lunch at Gull's Lake
Jun 13 - Carseland - Wyndham PP to Johnston Canyon Campground,
Banff National Park, AB. Played in Calgary - Devonian Gardens,
lunch in mall. Glenbow -Alberta Museum. Best Indian interpretation.
F. Remington display, Cagary statues - Inuit Eskimo, Dancess, two
businessmen. Donair for lunch, nimifel bars. Mountains! Too
fantastic! Took 1A, horse country. Indian with black cowboy hat
with feather, herding horses with German shepard running alongside.
Banff had outbreak Geardia lamblio. Beaver fever. Fresh trout.
Jun 14 - Johnston Canyon CG to Castle Junction CG. Eggs for
breakfast. Hike Johnston Canyon Trail. 11.6km Beautiful, upper and
lower falls. Beautiful blue-green limestone cliffs. Spray room and
rainbows, inkpots. Lunch by stream in alpine valley. Hole-in-Wall.
Banff Springs Hotel. Bow Falls. Hoodoo's, swim in sulfur pool.
Castle Junction CG. Two nurses from Edmontin Univ. Hospital. Very
tired. Castle Junction - creek flowing through.
Jun 15 - Castle Junction CG to Wilcox Creek CG, Jasper NP. Pancakes
for breakfast, Rick Bronson gormet chef. Elk, male and female. Male
with huge rack, all fuzzy yet, right by bathroom. Lake Louise -
beautiful cyan hiked along lake to turn off, then north. Through
snow, beautiful vistas, Pikas and chipmunks. Mirror Lake and Lake
Ages (ice, waterfall), teahouse. Crowfoot Glacier. Bow Lake. Peyto
Lake, Mistaya Canyon, Wilcox Creek CG, Jasper NP. Mountains with
pouring rain.
Jun 16 - Wilcox Creek CG to Jasper CG. Still raining and cold! Wore
long underwear, wool sweater, jeans, hat and mittens on my feet!
Columbia Icefields. Toe of glacier and glacial goop. Sunwaptha and
Athalosia Falls. Meeting of waters - whirlpool and athebasc. Spent
a great evening with Jo and Dave, English on honeymoon with circus
tent. Dave and Rick drank beers. Jo and I finished on "awfully
expensive for a bad plum, don't you think?" Red wine cheered up
with apples and oranges. Good time!
Jun 17 - Jasper CG to Seeley Lake CG Hazelton, BC. Moose and silver
fox. Beautiful scenery but rain and clouds almost all day. nice
river drive. Mountains spreading out to wide valleys, small farms.
Fraser Lake - nice lake but too early to camp. Drive to 9PM to make
ferry.
Jun 18 - Seeley Lake CG to Matanuska. Lucked out! Got up and 5AM,
drove to Price Rupert, a whirlwind tour of what looked like a nice
city. Made the boat, off to Alaska, beautiful boat - big, clean,
showers in bathroom, solarium, reclining lounge, cafeteria,
observation deck, bar, cabins. Forest Service talks. Saw porpoises,
3 on port, 4 on starboard. Rick saw whale breaching. Slept on floor
11PM - 2:30AM, got up for Wrangell Narrows.
Jun 19 - Petersburg, Alaska. Rain! Slept in car at tent city.
Breakfast at Irene's "We don't give a damn what they pay down
South". $1.60 for small milk, $16 for prawn dinner. Wide variety of
characters. Drove around Island. Golden eagle and three porcupines.
Lots of eagles at wharf, just like seagulls. Fish and chips, bought
salmon steak for dinner and crab to snack. Excellent! Everyone
wears thes clay-colored boots that go up almost to the knee with
jeans tucked in. Petersburg pumps. Boat Columbia to Juneau.
Jun 20 - Juneau. Auke Bay CG. Rain and mist all day. Clouds about
30-40 feet up, obscuring mountains. Slept until 11AM. Walking tour
of Juneau. Tour boats and boat people. Salmon for lunch, halibut
for dinner. Gold creek picnic. Legislative bodies. Bars -
Billiken's in Douglas, Lucky Lady - moose man, Red Dog Saloon -
sawdust. Open till 2AM weekdays, 5AM weekends.
Jun 21 - Juneau - No rain! Partly cloudy sky which in the southeast
translates as sunny! Mendenhall Glacier - neat! Three mile hike -
bright blue. Mt. Robert's walk. Downtown for shopping and pizza
(good) at Patti's. Back to CG by 7PM - packed with picnicers and
people fishing for salmon and biting black flies (they love Rick!).
Fun to watch everybody fish for himphies (pink salmon). Will leave
at 7AM (hopefully!) on Malaspina to Skagway. Fireworks and parties
unleash all night solsice party.
Jun 22 - Juneau Auke Bay CG to Wolk Creek CG. On boat Malaspina
from Juneau to Skagway. Took long, lovely shower right off.
Beautiful day - blue sky, no clouds, hot. Lots of glaciers, blow
spout of whale, seals. Haines and Hazel's Chuckwagon Hamburger
$3.20, fries $1.25. Skagway - definately a 1-horse town! Dirt main
street - Broadway. Two love boats. Doing a lot of renovating. Drove
to Whitehorse. Hwy 2. Chilkoot Pass, Yukon River, lakes and rock.
Road bad out of Skagway. Great in Canada - bituminous! Whitehorse,
Yukon Terr. pop. 14,000 Yukon-White Pass RR. Daylight still
11:30PM
Jun 23 - Whitehorse YT to Condgon Creek CG. Another beautiful day!
Didn't move to 11AM. Saw sternwheeler SS Klondike II - neat and
definately worthwhile. Whitehorse, okay town. Log skyscraper,
church, train depot. Beautiful scenery road, trees, mountains. Town
are really just crossroads with bare essentials ie. Hanes Junction
public building is a liquor store, library, bank, city offices,
state offices. Horses with bells in road. Kluane NP - Wow! Camped
righ on Kluane Lake - largest and highest and coldest in Yukon.
Beach. Speghetti for dinner. Muskeg site for tent.
Jun 24 - Condgon Creek CG to Delta Junction, AK. Wide delta with
braided glacial stream. Snowcapped mountains, beautiful. Forest
fire. Rick and four helpers to put up tent, CG by airfield.
Jun 25 - Delta Junction to Fairbanks, AK. Hot 95 degrees F,
farthest North and hotest. Navajo tacos. Alaskaland. Saw Mt.
McKinley from campus. Univ. of AK, Fairbanks - nice campus. No ice
anywhere in town. Stayed at pub from 8 till closing. 1AM, still
light and hot! Pub - beer and M&M's. Skagway teacher band: PF
and the fliers, good! Got a little dancing in. Camped at Santa
Clause house, rather collapsed at Santa Clause house. Pulled in at
2AM, partially blitzed. Nice warm night.
Jun 26 - Fairbanks to Denali. Did laundry at Santa's Suds at North
Pole, AK -Finally! $1.50 wash. Religiously did our laundry. Museum.
Drove to Denali - beautiful drive. Camped at Teklanika River Tanana
River follows road - bridges, mountains.
Jun 27 - Teklanika River, Denali NP. Caught free shuttle bus at
8:30AM. Saw lots of caribou, one grizzly, grizzly sow with 2 cubs.
Caribou on snow to keep bugs off of nose. Grizzlies - powerful
bears. Denali was clouded in, get a feeling of it's greatness.
Polychrome pass. Continued on to Wonder Lake - only wonderful
mosquitos there. Road was impressive. Rain at night - steady
downpour - now I know why everyone else has moble homes. Ranger
talk on wolves. Japanese neighbors.
Jun 28 - Teklanika River, Denali. Woke up to sunshine! Rain over.
Caught bus at 7:50AM. Two girls from MSU. Japanese couple on
honeymoon - talked with them alot. Denali - a little cloudy in
middle but could see. It's so impressive, it's the only mountain
you can look at, it just rises over all of them. Saw blonde grizzly
mom with caribou, lots of Dall sheep, two marmots (look like golden
badgers), two moose. CG all closed up. English blokes, finally
pitched tent.
Jun 29 - Anchorage, AK. Looks like a town of about 80,000 until you
drive the roads. Fourth St. derelicts. Walked all over town - Cook
Inlet, Knik and Turnagin Arms, Sleeping Native. Saw "Trading
Places" good music. Met Rick's friend Brian Hickey, met at hostel
in Italy. La Mex, Chillicoot Charlies, etc. Many "grande's" and
beers. Staying with Brian at his sisters Colleen and brother Kevin.
Originally camped at "Tent City" Lions CG.
Jun 30 - Betsy hung over all morning. Peach margaritas (yuk!).
Showers, yeah! Rode bikes all over town, three hours on bike paths,
UAA. Sloppy Joes at Valley of Moon Park. Went to the 25 year
statehood celebration on the Park Strip. 50 ton bonfire. Frisbee!
Met Brian and Kevin at LeMex, Fly-by-Night club with Lulu
Small.
Jul 1 - Up by 11AM. Saw "Return of Jedi" with a million kids. Drove
downtown for fish and chips in London Bus. Museum running out of
things to do. Out to Chugath State Park for picnic dinner. Spent
early evening at UAA library reading paper.
Jul 2 - Slept all morning amidst phone and door bell. Bought
supplies for hike. Drove up to Johnson Pass with Brian. Hiked in
9.5 miles to Bench Lake. Beautiful - lots of water, birches, snow.
Top raman noodles, steaks, fruit, coliflower, lima. Plane lands on
lake. Beautiful weather.
Jul 3 - Slept (Rick mostly) morning. Betsy talked to llama.
Fishing, moose, porkupine. Hiked back out, last 1/2 hour took
forever. Went to Seward for Forth of July fireworks. Yukon bar full
of Ancoragites for Mt. Marathon Run - up 3000 feet in 1.5 miles and
back. Drove way out past Seward on a "road" and camped in someone's
front yard. Very windy. Rained alot.
Jul 4 - Rainy morning for marthoners. Drove to Homer, ate at
Sourdough Sal's - good food. Crab and clams at Homer amidst
fireworks. Walked on beach. Nite at Salty Dawg Saloon.
Jul 5 - Homer Spit, beautiful day. Bought clams and crab. Betsy
fished at Anchor River, cra lunch with Betty. Showers in Ninilchia.
Kenai was a nothin' town. Had "breakfast" at Sourdough Sal's.
Beautiful reflections along Kenai River. To Portage Glacier CG.
Jul 6 - Portage Glacier. Brian was working so on to Valdez. Rainy.
Matanuska Glacier, was huge 27 mile long 6 mile wide. Mexican lunch
in Anchorage. Free movies in Valdez.
Jul 7 - Valdez - Museam, looking for fresh fish - none. Nice scenic
drive out of Valdez to CG south of Tok. Worthington Glacier.
Speghetti lunch in Valdez park strip.
Jul 8 - Drive to Dawson. All gravel road from Tetlin Junction.
Slow. Stuck bulldozer as roadblock. Dawson City - free ferry across
Yukon to town. Camped on Yukon with about 24 daylight. Dawson City
- different but expensive. Everything is shipped via Vancouver
through Whitehorse. $1.25 icecream cone. $1.59 loaf of bread. Whole
city is historic site. Beer parlour - 11PM beer license. Indians
and French Canadians and locals Sourdough Saloon, Klondike Kate's -
too sanitary for Rick. Ferry back to CG - Chilkoot trail. Man from
Tennoses
Jul 9 - Dawson City to Little Salmon Lake, YT. Saw SS Keno, Gold
Room, Robt. Service's cabin, Jack London's cabin. Drove Klondike
Hwy to Carmacks. Cambell Hwy to CG. Beautiful clear lake 25 miles
long. Spent evening talking to Lloyd and Hermena, son Milan.
Jul 10 - Little Salmon Lake GC to Simpson Lake. Slept till 9:30 AM,
beautiful AM - sunshine and wind. Babysat for Keno. Toured Faro.
beautiful drive down Campell Hwy - ending 761 miles of gravel.
Camped at Simpson Lake - nice spot, ferocious mosquitos!. Typical
Yukon day.
Jul 11 - Slept to 9:30 again! Beautiful AM, sunshine. Drove to
Watson Lake. Betsy mad over shower girl. Munising signpost in
Watson Lake, Betsy autographed. Took showers! Now on the alcan and
into northern Rocky Mountains. Camped at Wild Rose CG, Muncho Lake.
Beautiful Carribean blue - Copper oxide leached into water.
Mosquitoes up the wazoo but okay. Cutters and smoke.
Jul 12 - Muncho Lake to Ft. Liard, NWT. Beautiful AM, mountain
reflected in water. Stone sheep all over road. Fort Nelson, ferry!
Laird Hwy "unofficially" open. Took off to Ft. Nelson in a hurry in
order to get gas at Ft. Liard. Only open 3:30 to 4:30PM. Unaware of
time change! Pulled into Ft. Liard late. While Rick checked in at
Beaver office, I found flat tire and started to change it. Three
good looking guys rushed to help me. Off and on in five minutes!
Got gas and went to CG. Bill and Keefer in CG - neat people!
Sugarbush, VT ski instructor. Six months at Laburge, SA. Going
canoeing in white water down S. Nahani River - Virginia Falls.
Truckload of local girls from Ft. Liard and Nelson pulled into
party. French people. Bet at 2AM.
Jul 13 - Ft. Liard. Up at 9:30! Went to Forestry Office to fix
tire. Betsy sat in sun, talked to people, played with dog awhile.
Rick fixed tire. Saw girls from last night. Bicycle patch seemed to
work after sanding and lots of glue on tire. Long slow gravel road
from Ft. Liard to Hay River - gravel hump in middle of road,
sometimes bad since car sits so low to ground. Mosquitos and
no-see-ums real bad. Rick sprayed the car door to get into car,
killed 1000 mosquitos inside of the car. Nice CG in Hay River with
showers at 10:30PM. Stopped at Carol Falls - campfire still smoking
with chair.
Jul 14 - Hay River, NWT to Twin Lakes. Showers with Rod. Great
Slave Lake - huge boats. Fishing villiage - poor people. Show
machines, no fish. Old town - harbor, lots of freight, artic bound.
New town - a few rich people, no fish, nice new area with purple
school. Louise Falls, Alexandria Falls. Rained steady the rest of
the day. Campled at Twin Lakes 8PM, wet and cold. Shared fire in
shelter with Juan and ? Too rainy to fish so drank. Rain all
night.
Jul 15 - Twin Lakes to Edmonton, SK. Lots of rain. Lunch in Peace
River in the in the dog house, licorice, ice cream. Drove, drove,
and drove. Met with Ingrid at Casablanca's. Overpriced stuffy
place. Stayed in 2nd motel on trip. Ice, soap, Klennex, showers,
T.P, French cartoons. Beds are better than sleeping bags for
somethings.
Jul 16 - Edmonton to Meadow Lake Park. Betsy slept while Rick did
laundry. Walked around Edmonton. Farmers market, museum, Safeway.
Drove through intermittent rain, four rainbows, hail, sun. Picked
up Joe (Cree) to go to weddings. Camped at Meadow Lake Park
(Misothy Lake). Talked with Phil until 2AM while Betsy snored. Phil
talked, talked, and talked. Windy night with Northern lights.
Jul 17 - Meadow Lake to border. Left before rain. Drove though
heavy clouds to intermittent storms. Rodeo, boat race with
hamburgers and 65 cent double cones. Fields of bright yellow
canola. Drove through northern Sask. Nicer than the south! Hilly
with trees. Last 30 miles of road was a bitch, maintained by no
one, neither Sask. or Manitoba! Camped with mosquitos on the
border.
Jul 18 - Sask/Man border to Pinegrove Half, Manitoba. Up at 6:15AM
with rain to take tent down. On the road at 7AM. Little, little
towns. Riding Mountain National Park. Lunch and swam at Moon Lake -
great! Sunshine finally after three days! Drove through park to
Wasagaming - like a little Banff, no like beautiful park, anomaly
in Manitoba. Trees, lakes, hills in middle of prarie. Lake Agassie.
Dauphin - Ukrainian. Portoga la Prarie (Pare) in Winnipeg. Dinner
at LaBeribere Park south of Winnipeg. Nice park - ground squirrels.
Betsy got to run. CG buggy as usual! TCH 1 on both sides but nice
bathrooms and showers.
Jul 19 - Pinegrove Half, MB to Thunder Bay, ON. Up late, muggy.
Shower time! Drive to Thunder Bay, very rocky and lakey. Fish in
Kenora, Kakabekka Falls. Toxic dump CG in TB. Talked to Dr. of
Physcology. Betsy and Rick tired of driving.!
Jul 20 - Thunder Bay, ON to NEYS. Goof-off day - excellent weather
- hot for Lake Superior. Shower and run for Betsy. Shopping for the
car. Salad (Burger King) for Betsy. Drive around town, lunch at
"Lookout" park. Very scenic drive by Lake Superior. Great weather.
Camp at nice provicial park on Lake Superior. Fog on beach. Early
to bed.
Jul 21 - NEYS to Duparquet. Up at 6AM! Shower for Rick, run back in
the rain. Third day for early morning rain. Goosed in Wawa, walked
around town - cute little town on a big beautiful lake - Lake Wawa.
No $1.99 breakfast. Ice cream in Timmins - looked around town.
Drove and drove to Duparquet - municipal part - went to Mayor's
Dance with Sylvana and Ivan. Drank beers and danced.
Jul 22 - Duparquet, PQ to Lac Chiqoubiche, PQ. Wide awake at 8AM -
well, almost. Breakfast at Hotel. Gravel roads to Amos - pretty big
town, huge church. Patate frites stands in every little town along
road - Rick dying. Lac Parent. French radio. Finally stopped at
Chaplais for french fries. Camped in Chibougamau Forest, nice.
Store, ice house, shower, etc. Mosquitoes. Big lake, lots of fish.
Dark by 9:30PM, what a switch.
Jul 23 - Bochart to Riveire du Loop, PQ. Up at 7AM for best shower
of trip! Classic summer day! Quebec is beautiful province, so
vaired, French style architecture. Drove through all little towns
along Chamouchouawe River and Lac St. Jean - would have liked to
stay longer. Windsurfer. Riviere Saguency. Baie des Ha! Ha!
Sailoats! St. Simeon for ferry. Beautiful beach - cold water.
Walked town, dinner at Litbrizon. Rick - cod, Betsy - cipate (pasty
- hash). Ferry to Riviere du Loop, camped at city CG. Field by
river.
Jul 24 - Riviere du Loop to Cap Chat, PQ. Drove through neat little
farm towns on ridge overlooking the river. Side roads, lunch at
Jardin Botannique in Rimouski. Fat ducks. Caose Croutes (Snack
bar's). Lots of poisons and patate frites shopes. Rocher de Cap
Chat. Camped at Au Bord de la Mer in Cap Chat, right on St.
Lawrence beach with view of Cap Chat and church and lighthouse.
Scallop newburg. Two couples from Florida, Clarence (Bacon) &
Edna, Penny and Schlitz.
Jul 25 - Cap Chat, PQ to Forulon, Gaspe, PQ. Betsy up at 7AM for
shower. Waited for two hours in St. Anne de Monts for bank to open.
Two dejune - $2.25 each with $5 in our pocket. Neat little towns,
come over hill and see a cave with town nestled among church.
Lighthouse - neat! Guide with translator selling frais pain and
wooden ships from road. Camped at Forillon National Park, Le Harve.
So nice! Big beautiful bathroom with shower and kitchen. Nice and
clean. Beach with crabs and lots of starfish. Really neat purple,
reds and rusts. CG situated right on at Gaspe. A favorite. Met our
Airstream friends from Florida.
Jul 26 - Forillon National Park to New Richmond. Showers in AM.
nice sunny day, Gaspe sticking out like a sore thumb. Hiked Mont
St. Alan trail in AM. Lunch at Gaspe Penin. Checked out beach at
Peniuoville. Little tram takes you out on spit. Bought fresh crab
at St. Marjouie. Perci roct - Betsy walked out. Reminded of
Mackinaw Island. This side peninsula little too touristy, town
spread along road. Rain in PM. Camped at Cascapedia River. Crab for
dinner - another adventure in eating with vise grips and pliers!
Frisbee. Rick got ripped off on beer bottles.
Jul 27 - Cascapedia River, New RIchmond to Richibueto, NB. Up and
away early - 8AM. Traveled along Bat des Chaleuos. Fisherman out.
Acadia. loved NB! Beautiful, sunny, energetic day. Shrimp
sandwiches at Dalhousie. Beaches all over, swam at Grand Anse. Two
frozen lobster at $3.25/lb, two fresh lobster at $4.85/lb. Ate all
AM, lunch at Tracadies. New park, fresh lobster! Bought blueberries
from kids on road. Real bargaining session or communication
problem. Koughibougan National Park full, went down to Puigue Park
at Richibueto. Ate all day.
Jul 28 - Richibueto, NB to Green Park, PEI. Up and out early. Ferry
to PEI at 11:30AM. Lobster salad sandwiches at Sandy Cove, bought
fresh baby clams from boy for $.50/lb. Drove to disapidated west
end of Isle, camped at Green Park with frisbee golf, tenasious
mosquitos and rasberries.
Jul 29 - Green Park, PEI to Wood Island PEI. Showers in morning,
National Park with live lobster. Drove through prosperous middle
and around all of the neglected east end. Stop and got ice cream
and ran into Souris's "Daughter of ill repute" fighting. Brakes
were okay i Moneque but sliced tire - Rick doesn't worry. Clams and
lobster sandwich at Wood Is. in the rain.
Jul 30 - Wood Is. PEI to Mackintosh Brook, Breton Highlands Park.
Wakeup alarm malfunction for ferry but made it when Betsy asked
Rick "what time is it?". $1.99 breakfast in New Glasglow. Extended
tour of environs. Supplies in Antagonish after bad navigation by
Rick. Drove to New Breton Is, stopped for yogurt and tomatoes.
Mackeral at UMF in Port Hood. Chowder and fish and chips. Stayed at
rainy/windy Breton Highlands National Park. Picked up Marie in rain
in Inverness. Tea at her sister's cottage.
Jul 31 - Briton Highlands National Park to Goshen, NS. Beautiful
day, mountainous drive and hiking through National Park Beach
(Ingonish) for lunch. Frisbee, cold water, big waves. Bought NB
lobster at Wreck Cove. Drove to Goshen, talked with family with
Dartmouth.
Aug 1 - Goshen, NS to Chester Basin, NS. Woke up with dogs. Toured
Sherbrooke Village. Drove through numerous little towns until
Dartmouth - Halifax. Dartmouth Natal Day with parades and ships.
Bluenose II, breweries closed. St. Pauls church, town clock,
citadel. Shopped at historical properties. Dinner at Camilles,
super seafood in a bad location. Rain and fog in late PM. Stayed at
Audrey's Guest House with Audrey Corkum $20. Three bedrooms and
bath, along south shore.
Aug 2 - Chester Basin to Wilmot, NS. Foggy, foggy morning. Foggy
day, coastal drive, donuts, Yarmouth tour. Lunch outside of town,
swordfish, scallops purchased. Digby - cute fishing town - no
scallops. Whites CG - seafood newburg dinner- scallops, swordfish
and halibut. Betsy swam in Anapolis River. Rick drank Kieths.
Aug 3 - Wilmot, NS to Five Islands, NS. Corn $0.35/ear! Donuts at
Tim Hortons, good. Changed tires to put sliced one on back. Flat
tire on back sliced. Hamburgers, corn for lunch at Five Islands,
suning and tiding in Bay of Fundys largest tides. Gouda cheese and
ice cream at Damned Dutchmans. Nice big front yard at park -
Frisbee. Clear night for stars. Up at 2AM to check out low tide but
too dark.
Aug 4 - Five Islands, NS to New River Beach, NB. Bathroom in city
hall in Amhurst. Betsy's magnetic hill, big rip-off but free. Drove
through Morton, trying hard to find side roads but NB map stinks.
Donuts in Harry's Bakery. Caves in St. Martins. By the sea lunch at
Cantina. Toured market square and city market and loyalists burial
ground. Park with people eating lunch next to grave stones. Nice
city but Betsy wanted to drink outside. A no-no without food. Got
lobster at city market. Lobster/clam dinner at NRB. Walked
beach.
Aug 5 - New River Beach, NB to Clifton, ME. St. Andrews -
picturesque little town on point. St. Stevens - blueberry pancakes
$1.75 breakfast. Lunch at wayside Ambrg's corn on seashore. Bar
Harbor - Arkadia National Park. Nice park but fogged in with
tourists. Got lobsters again $3.15/lb soft shelled. Dexter shoes -
Betsy goes on spree. Drove through Ellsworth to Parks Pond. Run-in
with owner about site number.
Aug 6 - Parks Pond, ME to St. Joseph, ME. Up early for drive along
Maine's back roads. $2 breakfast, two eggs, bacon, toast, fries in
Bangor. Old Town Canoe - unimposing building and showroom with one
of best canoes in world. Moosehead Lake - lunch at Greenville.
Bought fresh lobster and fresh corn. Betsy ran. Early PM
thundershower. Maynards - 30 pound block of ice, river swimming.
Seemed like oldest ice machine in the world. Quebec customs-
thorough drug search with threatening questions. Lovely Quebec
countryside. Private CG with nice sites. Frisbee. Cows across
street.
Aug 7 - St. Joseph, PQ to Massueville, PQ. Quebec! Beautiful city.
Citadel with changing of guard. Walked all over town - Hotel
Chateau-Frontenac, Guv's Promenade, craft fair, sailboats on St.
Lawrence, Rue de Petit Champlain, horse carriages. Lunch of quiche
and croissants. Drove along banks of St. Lawrence. CG - definite
lack of transient sites.
Aug 8 - Massueville, PQ to Bristol, PQ. Rick up at 6AM to take
shower and make sure Betsy was awake. Took subway under river to
Montreal. Cheapest breakfast ever! Rick even had cherry pie with
his! Walked all over town. Lunch at tavern in Youville Square -
great place! Thundershowers! Drove to Ottawa and toured city. Byway
Market and Parliment building. Two for one while waiting out storm.
Drove along Ottawa River on Quebec shore. Camped at Mr. Thompson's
Pine Lodge. Nice beach, real resort area (all English).
Aug 9 - Bristol, PQ to Mattawa, ON. Nice slow morning. Beach walk
and destroyed frisbee. Drove through English Quebec. Patate frites
and long red covered bridge. Lunch at National Institute of
Forestry and cassette tape hike. Drive along Ottawa River - scenic
walked around Mattowa. Camped at Antoine Provicial Park - free
because dismantled, on Ottawa River. Read Montreal Gazette by
river. Nice fire on a cool night.
Aug 10 - Mattawa, ON to Munising, MI. Rick pestering Betsy at
6:30AM, up at 7. $1.95 breakfast in Sturgeon Falls. Beer in
Sudburg, car tour of town, Betsy style. Patate frites in Narin
Center. Lunch near Serpent River. Bought fish in Sault Ste. Marie,
ON. Walked the town, spent last canadian $ in brewery. Lunch in
park with sea gulls and ducks. Drove to Munising. Post Trip Notes
