Every time there is a public vote on timber issues, the timber industry is able to quote with precision the exact number of dollars that will be lost through mill layoffs and the whole secondary economy dependent on these jobs. The last Oregon Voter's Pamphlet had a good example in the Measure 64 section. What they always fail to mention is the cost of clear-cutting to other forest-dependent industries. When timber harvest destroys salmon beds, the fishing industry suffers, but those numbers are not included in the projected economic effect of the ballot measure. Similarly, smaller industries from mushroom and herb gathering to retail sales of recreational equipment lose money when the health of the forest is sacrificed for timber production.
