Gary Kutcher has worked for twenty-five years as a community organizer in Lane County He helped Oregon Fair Share, a statewide consumer group set up a Lane County office and pass regulations banning life or health threatening utility shutoffs. Gary also helped pass utility rates that reward energy conservation. With Springfield ratepayers, Gary worked to end construction of two WPPSS nuclear plants, saving ratepayers millions of dollars. Gary worked with Oregon Peace Works to write legislation for the Eugene and Lane County Nuclear Free Zones. Voter approved, these important measures provide protections from nuclear waste transport and disposal and prohibit businesses from developing nuclear weapons in Lane County. Gary worked from 1987 to 1993 with Forest Conservation Council gain significant protection for old growth forests in the Pacific Northwest. This project is part of an effort to save the last of Oregon's ancient forest for recreation and wildlife uses. Gary is currently director of Sustainable Forestry Network (SFN), which is working to stop clearcut logging and the use of toxic herbicides and pesticides in Oregon's forests. SFN is building a statewide network of individuals and businesses to promote alternatives to clearcutting , like selective logging and non-toxic weed and pest controls. Gary resides on a small farm, southwest of Eugene, which he is helping develop into an organic farm. Gary has worked with many community groups for protection of human rights and the environment and co-hosts a weekly TV show on Community TV--Channel 29.
