DVD Production for Planetariums An introduction by Jim Craig, Planetarium Department Head James H. Lynn Planetarium, Gastonia, NC |
DVD burners usually come with some kind of software for editing video and burning it to the disks. In many cases, this software will work well enough.
Here is the editing and burning software I use.
Ulead DVD Movie Factory
Sonic MyDVD (version 3)
Most of us can't afford to throw away DVDs when we're learning the process and, because the learning curve is pretty steep, you will make mistakes (unless you're more gifted than the rest of us). Fortunately, the Pioneer DVD players will play back DVD-RW disks which means you can simply erase your mistakes and start again.
When buying DVD media, it's no time to be cheap. Better quality disks will give better results.
I use this only for converting AVI files to MPEG-2 files (more on that later). Its editing capabilities are limited. I also had trouble with playback of DVDs that had more than 30 titles on them when I burned them using this program.
I use this for composing menus and burning the disks. You can do some pretty cool stuff with menus using this program and I've never had problems accessing video segments when I use this. It can do the AVI to MPEG-2 conversion but it takes a long time.
Note: this is the software that came packaged with the Cendyne DVD burner.
