| Welcome to the Vegetarian Survival Guide for the Eugene area. Inside you will find information, resources and reasons: information on area vegetarian restaurants, resources for veggie lifestyle support, and perhaps even more important, reasons why a vegetarian diet is a planet-friendly, ethical, and healthy choice. As we enter a new millennium, it is time to reconsider humanity's old ways. Switching from an animal to a plant based diet is healthier for people, healthier for the ecosystem, and, of course, better for the animals. Eating meat leaves behind a toll that generations to come will be forced to pay. Half of all water in drought-prone California is used by the meat and dairy industry. The meat industry causes more water pollution than any other industry in the US. 87% of agricultural land is used to produce animals for food. 20,000 pounds of potatoes can be grown on one acre of land, but only 165 pounds of beef can be produced in the same space. Rainforests are being destroyed at the rate of 125,000 square miles per year to create space to raise animals for food. Raising animals for food requires more than one-third of all raw materials and fossil fuels used in the US. The best thing you can do for the environment is to go vegetarian. Out of all the animals killed for all reasons every day, including fur, laboratories and shelters, 98% of them are killed for nothing other than our daily dietary preferences. The ruthless exploitation and cruelty to our fellow creatures that continues daily on a massive scale is now unnecessary, even obsolete. Its bad for us, its bad for them, and bad for the planet. Bad, too, for those who will come after us, the dead animal diet belies our claim to being a moral, ethical species. |

We invite all people to join us now in our movement.
We seek to establish vegetarianism as the normal,
mainstream, standard diet for everyday civilized humans.
