and is not intended to promote any one political agenda.
MISSION STATEMENT

The military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan are two of the most divisive issues facing Americans today.

Beyond the polarizing labels of “pro-war” or “anti-war”, we all share a deep sense of loss for those who have been killed or wounded in these conflicts and for their loved ones.

Therefore, we are inviting all people, regardless of political stance
to join us in a day of mourning.

As we gather together under the banner of our shared grief, it is our hope that this event can offer hope, resources for healing, and the development of a respectful and supportive community dialogue.

DESCRIPTION OF EVENT

Participants will gather at the courthouse plaza in silence as names of the dead are recited. Representations of 5 U.S. flag-draped caskets will be set up on the grounds. Caskets draped in black will represent Afghan and Iraqi dead. Participants are requested to wear attire befitting a memorial.

GOALS: The purpose of this event is to promote the following:

*INCREASED EMPATHY: for those suffering from loss.

*DIALOGUE: The simple act of sharing space can serve to break down barriers and create an environment which may foster future dialogue between people with divergent perspectives.

*COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Contact information will be available for veterans or their families who wish to obtain grief counseling as well as other related issues. We are in the process of contacting mental health professionals in the community with the goal of having them available as resource people at the event.
