In the news this week is the story
of a company using PR to convince the public that toxic sludge really
is good to spread around in a neighborhood. Find out how it's done next
Monday.
To help celebrate Earth Day on its eve, Eugene Media Action will
show the film "Toxic Sludge Is Good for You: The Public Relations
Industry Unspun" at Cozmic Pizza (199W. 8th Ave. in Eugene) beginning
Monday, April 21st at 7:30 PM. The film is narrated by Amy Goodman and
exposes how "PR" is used to distort news, silence debate, warp politics
and sell wars.
This engaging film focuses on the sleazy methods used to cynically
shift our perceptions, including the campaign to sneak genetically
engineered produce past public scrutiny and on to your family's dinner
table. "Toxic Sludge Is Good For You" tracks the development of the PR
industry from early efforts to win popular American support for World
War I to the role of crisis management in controlling the damage to
corporate image.
Reintroducing its indie media documentary film series, EMA
will join the Oregon Toxics Alliance in hosting a discussion after the
film.
Admission is free but donations and purchase of DVDs for home use are encouraged.

Eugene Media Action is a committee of Eugene PeaceWorks working to
educate
and empower citizens to view themselves as media critics and activists.
Media activism can range from lobbying mainstream media for more
accuracy,
fairness and diversity to supporting or even becoming the independent
media
During our seven-year history, we have sponsored many national and
regional
speakers who have addressed media issues.
Two years ago, we were a primary group helping to organize in
Eugene the
Peace Justice and Media conference where Jim Hightower and Molly Ivins
spoke
and last year we co-sponsored a speaking panel with Daniel Ellsberg,
Norman
Solomon and Medea Benjamin. Also last year we ran a weekly film
festival at
Cozmic Pizza where over a dozen political films were shown to the
public for
free. Our next event will be hosting the Stop the Wars Tour featuring
Norman
Solomon, the author of a new book, _War Made Easy_ (see
WarMadeEasy.com) and
David Rovics, the indie peace and justice folksinger on Sunday, October
23rd
at a location in Eugene to be determined.
Currently we have campaigns to have the progressive column of
Norman
Solomon reinstated into the Register Guard newspaper and _to put the
public back into public broadcasting_ in Oregon beginning with KLCC and the Jefferson
Network. We often table at major community events with media related
materials and welcome volunteers with or without media experience join our group.
