WSFrom March 13-16th, U.S. veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan testified, at the National Labor College just outside of Washington, D.C., to what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground in these occupations.

The four-day event brought together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence. In addition, there were panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels included everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.

EMA BRANCHES OUT TO VIDEO GAMES AND SPORTS WORLD FOR JULY FILMS AT COZMIC

In connection with the upcoming Olympic Trials, Eugene Media Action, a Committee of Eugene PeaceWorks and the Media Education Foundation proudly present a free screening of two provocative documentary films on Sunday, June 22 beginning at 7:30 PM at Cozmic Pizza (8th & Charnelton).

The opening film is titled “Game Over: Gender, Race & Violence in Video Games.” Game Over is the first educational documentary to address the fastest growing segment of the media through engaging questions of gender, race and violence. It offers a refreshing dialogue about the complex and controversial topic of video game violence, and is designed to encourage high school and college students to think critically about the video games they play.

The second film is “Playing Unfair: The Media Image of the Female Athlete This is the first video to critically examine the post-Title IX media landscape in terms of the representation of female athletes.

Sports media scholars Mary Jo Kane (University of Minnesota), Pat Griffin (University of Massachusetts), and Michael Messner (University of Southern California) look at the persistence of heterosexism and homophobia in perpetuating gender stereotypes. They argue for new media images which fairly and accurately depict the strength and competence of female athletes. Using numerous media examples, Playing Unfair is sure to stimulate debate among women and men, athletes and non-athletes about the meaning of these images in world transformed by the presence of women in sport.

Discussion of the two films will follow and DVDs of the two films will be available for sale for personal use. For more information, call EMA at 484-9167.

Thank you for your interest in
Eugene PeaceWorks!

Through the efforts of dedicated volunteers  and members like  you, our organization has  been an active presence in the community since its founding in 1981. For twenty-five years, we have  been promoting local and  international cooperation in the Peace  and Justice Movement. We support a commitment to world peace, social and environmental justice issues through nonviolent  grassroots action, education and mutual empowerment to show that  peace works. We provide office space and community organizing resources to community members, promote nonviolent strategies for direct action, and campaign against militarism and its use to preserve and promote other institutions of social and environmental oppression. Whether helping to make Eugene a nuclear free zone or fighting to end corporate greed, EPW has and will continue to work for justice locally and abroad.
