MILLIONS of modern families fear the newage (Aquarian Conspiracy - M. Ferguson, MegoTrends - J.Nessbitt; & The Third Wave - A.Tofler). alternative movements.of natural & spiritual freedoms, especially for children. The conservatives consider the "ecology & environmental" movements of "tree-huggers, pagan eco-warriors," organic gardening, eating & self healing to be dangerous, bad & immoral: "socialist, hippy, communist, perverts or newage" plots to take their kids &or land away by brainwashing in schools, mass-media,eco-fascist policies & in homes of shameless anarchists. So now there are some local laws now that make helping a run-away/abused child illegal for families & non-agencies. These agree with the 'national run-away search operations for lost youth, actually working since the '60s to find their kids. Another normal 'protectionist' policy is the 'anonymous complaints' of reports of alleged child-abuse or neglect, which works now to protect reporters/callers to authorities from being confronted in court by the accused, who may have their children taken away by the state for mere suspicion(without evidence)of real abuse or neglect.
That happened to us living communally in Portland in '75. It took months of counseling with ADS/CPS to get our 3 yo girl back, taken because she was crying behind a door, suspected by a visitor of our freelove cooperative parenting at home then. 1,000s of similar cases of state abduction happen yearly in U$ now, for nudity, home-birth, etc. One mom lost her baby(was returned later)for nursing & reporting(curiously) about the pleasure she felt then, which was misinterpreted as 'sexual abuse'. This is culture-clash, political warfare & paranoid bias projections at any 'threatening' people & programs in schools & parks, communities & communes.
They often fear instinctual & emotional, wild & free, psychic or spiritual changes that kids may choose to try, like, need or enjoy, so different than parents family-values! They treat/fear)their kids like they accept their own 'inner-child' of magic trust. It was NIxon, Reagan & most Repulicans who still promote the hardline bias, laws & policies at these 'evil' or punch megatrends of liberating youth freedoms of expression & choice. They may even hate natural, organic & free feelings, goals & potentials of evolving openly or naked, touching or bonding-together. Any reason to justify controlling the minor/youth by officials, adults & educators fears & rules!
The sacred cows of conservative/Christian families rant & rage against the liberal trends & radical movements they fear will change, dominate or hurt them. They may feel scared of 'green' education seducing their (needy?) children (property?) into pagan living, total recycling, camping out or organic gardening. They want the state to help them control kids, until they loose custody for stressing or hurting kids with punishment. They have similar reflexes & resistence to democratic classroom decisions, magic circle sharing feelings, & cooperative games, not 'god fearing activities banned from most public schools.
They complain about the 'liberal' (idealistic) 1992 UN "Declaration of Children's Rights" to safety, support, respect, education, good health care & some equality, as prayer/religion & US Constitution are not in classrooms. Their 'poor-me/victim' bias, blames radical/green/socialist activists plots to convert their children(our nation?) into peaceful non-punishing parenting.
In the Sept.'97 Oregon Observer(a liberatarian monthly)they are against the 'family resource centers' providing services, support groups & child care, all seem dangerous to them. Many fear policies of officials preventing punishment they use to train kid's responsibililty/obedience to adult authority & laws.
Overeactions also reject the "Healthy Start' programs of prenatal screening of young stressed pregnant moms in hospitals, that examine their causes & effects of abuse to prevent further child-abuse/neglect after birth in the critical bonding phase. They often assert(tho guilty?)rights to punish children like they were. Perhaps these negative reflexes & defences express some trama from child- hood abuse, so common in nuclear family on earth. The 'parental privilage' of 'owning children' is also projected at the state Family Resource Centers & family services that aim & work to make 'peace-at-home' by serving 'medical needs' for security & good health. But these all ignore most pollution as unhealthy or abuse, & deny natural instincts in parenting now.. So these conservatives critisize & organize to influence it in the legal system.
I've been doing HomEd since 1971 & promoting Kids-Lib since early '80s in NW USA, & networking nationally & globally from Hawaii. Now most home-schoolers reject the state standard tests of achievment over independent learners at home & elsewhere. We may agree with conservatives on this, for different reasons & results. What's more important is, what peace at home, natural environments, honest equality & creative options are offered by parents for kids to choose, sharing in family decisions, needs & resources? We tend to share more, with like minded souls home learners & mother nature, than focus on the laws, schools, crime & government agencies, to insure our freedom to learn in joy as curiosity, interest & inspiration let us trust urges to cooperate now
