Hideaki Anno is an intensely private, deeply reflective artist, and out of respect for his
enormous accomplishments -- both for what he's achieved, and for what he'll create in the future -- this guide
will focus more on the general context of Japanese anime than individual personalities. Japanese
anime (borrowed from the French term for comic strip, pronounced "ah-nee-may") is one of the great multinational art-forms of our time, spawned during
the 1960s by an unruly admixture of US animation, European auteur film, and Japan's own incomparable
traditions of wood carving, scroll painting and other graphic arts. Anime are actually
the televised form of "manga" or hand-drawn comic strips (a genre which, incidentally, continues to flourish
