Syllabus Information

What is a dance syllabus? It is a compilation of "school" figures, with a detailed breakdown of each of the technical elements for each step. By use of an effective syllabus, an instructor can teach students the proper technique for foot positions, rise and fall, alignment, and other elements, and allow students to discover the way that proper dance technique is both beautiful and functional. Use of a common syllabus also allows students and instructors to share a standard vocabulary about dance patterns and technique.

David teaches from the DVIDA—Dance Vision International Dancers Association—Syllabus, approved by the National Dance Council of America. The DVIDA Syllabus manuals and videotapes were created by dance luminaries Ron Montez, Jim and Jenell Maranto, Victor Veyrasset and Heather Smith, and Corky and Shirley Ballas. The DVIDA syllabus is remarkable for the clarity with which it describes the eight elements of each dance figure, and the manner in which the teacher can convey—and the student discover—the relationship between those elements, aesthetic and functional.

David passed his certification exam on the Bronze Smooth Syllabus I with High Honors. He continues to train for additional certification in both the Smooth and Rhythym syllabi. His examiner, Diane Jarmolow, has trained hundreds of teachers for professional exams, including several U.S. Dance Champions. She is a fifteen-time winner of the "Top Teacher" award at national competitions.
