Home Page

Welcome to the Internet home of the Bear Cub den of Pack 24 in Evergreen District, Eugene, Oregon. If you are interested in joining or have questions about Cub Scouts, contact David Olsson, the den leader. If you're curious about what kinds of activities we did last year, take a look at the Archive Page.

I have changed the sidebar calendar link to "Pack Page" to encourage all members of the pack to check there for calendar information. The Pack Page includes the Calendar.

Last Saturday was the pack's snow trip and, by the looks of it, it was great fun. Ben and I had to skip it as he had stomach flu problems on Friday.

Today is another snow day, as big flakes are falling here in Eugene! We've been out sledding and building snowmen for the last several hours. I hope you all are having fun, too.

We have a den meeting scheduled for tomorrow and I will be putting together a plan today, but we will cancel the meeting if 4J schools are closed. To find out more about that, check the 4J Wether Information Page.

Leadership Changes: Dick Jacobson will be resigning as cubmaster at the end of the year--his son is crossing over to boy scouts--and I, David Olsson, will be assuming that role. Don Harkins has kindly agreed to take over den leader duties for the end of this year and we can hope that he'll continue next year. Please encourage him to do so. Becky Stenzel is taking over the chair of the pack leadership committee. Thank you to all our leaders and involved parents! Please contact me if you'd like to become more involved. (Don will lead the den meeting in mid-February, while I am out of town. Then we'll transition in March and Don will take over in April.)

Finally, note that I have updated the calendar--on the pack page--to show recent changes to upcoming events.

December 2007

I did not post information in December, but the scouts did some fun stuff, including a knot-tying day at a den meeting, Holiday singing and hugs at Olive Plaza, an assisted living facility in downtown, and a Pinewood Derby-themed den meeting.

Well, with some scheduling problems, its been almost four weeks since our last meeting! I hope most of you will be able to attend Monday's (the 19th) den meeting. We'll make some cake-style neckerchief slides for Tuesday's Cake Auction, play games and update achievements.

Popcorn is in! Becky Stenzel is sorting through popcorn is her garage. Please drop by her house tomorrow afternoon to collect your orders or give her a call to arrange for another time to come by.

As soon as I post this page to the Internet, I'll get busy on updating the calendar, so you should be able to rely on it for upcoming dates. As always, please let me know if there are errors or omissions.

Today's den meeting was the funnest ever! We built our own model rocket and then went out behind the church and launched several models. It was a beautiful day and the rocket flights were all fine (well, except that one that turned horizontal and flew straight for the side of the church!

Recall Notice: Because of the use of lead paint in its manufacture, the maker of our "Immediate Recognition Kit" is recalling it. I have some older ones, made in the USA rather than China, which I will distribute at the next meeting. You can read more by clicking the graphic to the right:

On Saturday we met at Detering Orchards for some Apple Day fun! We played in the Hay Maze, Had Free Apple Cobbler and cider, and picked apples in the orchard.

Tomorrow, we'll have our usual den meeting. We'll work on some props and practice a skit for the October Pack Meeting and browse through and discuss the Bear Handbook. I also want to practice our Flag Ceremony, which we may do at the Pack Meeting this month. BTW, I have free handbooks to give out to those who have not yet purchased one.

And a reminder that it looks like we'll be able to stay together as just one den, because several of our new prospective scouts have decided that their schedules are too full to add scouting. Too bad, they're missing out on a ton of fun!

October 2, 2007

Last weekend was Fun with Son at Camp Baker. Ben and I had a great time and enjoyed seeing Jordan and his dad, as well as Wolf Cub Jared and his dad, John Dodson. We enjoyed skits, range sports (bb-guns, archery and slingshots), treasure hunting, frisbee golf, campfires and more! And the weather was beautiful up until the time we had to break camp. Please call me if you are planning to attend the next session and have questions.

Detering Orchards trip is this Saturday at 11 am. See you there!

Several parents have contacted me to say that their sons will not participate in scouting this year, so it looks like we'll run just one den of Bear Scouts. So I'm looking forward to having help from assistants who would otherwise have to run the other den. And we should have a nice active group from the remaining boys.

Next week's den meeting will include working on some jokes for the October pack meeting and will include some discussion of the Bear Handbook and what to expect in the upcoming year.

Upcoming Outing: Our October theme is Down on the Farm. In connection with that, we will take a trip to Detering Orchards on Saturday, October 6, 2007. There will be apple cobbler and ice cream, free pumpkins and a horse-draw hay ride. Admission is free. Meet us there at 11:00 a.m.

On Monday, September 24, we had our first den meeting. It was a lot of fun, and included making railroad-themed neckerchief slides and playing railroad games. We also reviewed our Bobcat knowledge and talked a bit about upcoming events.

Our next meetings: Oct 8 den meeting; Oct 16 pack meeting.

Reminder: Efforts are underway with the Popcorn Sale. Do your part to help your son raise money for scouting activities and earn great prizes!

Books and Uniforms: If you have not yet purchased a Bear Handbook, let me know; the pack is providing them to all scouts who need them. And if you need some help with uniform purchase, note that there is an "experienced" uniform program coordinated by the district. Call Jim Thomas at 461-7239.

Don't Forget to check for upcoming events!

September 6, 2007

I'll be sending out an email in the next day or two, with initial info for scouts and scouters. I don't think we'll have a den meeting before the first pack meeting, Sept 18, but we'll try to get one on the calendar by then.

By the way, the Oregon Trail Council has a beautiful new building. On Saturday, September 8, the council will be celebrating its grand opening with tours, games, a climbing wall, lunch and ice cream and more!

Call the Scout Office at 541-485-4433 for details.
