That means spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. We are committed to guide your child's growth. One of our functions is to assist you as parents to fulfill your responsibility in the provision of a sound academic education, integrated with a Christian view of God and the world. It will be expected that upon enrollment of your child that you will concern yourself with our goals and standards. By placing your children in Sonshine Christian School, you agree to allow them to be taught according to the standards we have and the beliefs we hold to be true. HISTORY AND INTRODUCTION SONSHINE CHRISTIAN School had its roots in the dreams of its founders, Margie Creech and Darlene Maring. In 1981, Margie and Darlene began ABC Preschool and Kindergarten and by 1989 the desire to have a "Christian" elementary school burned deep within their hearts. The school's first year essentially was 1989-90 under the title of ABC School. It was actually just an expansion of ABC School that year, and comprised of a first/second grade combination class. The first part of the year the school was held in the First Christian Church basement and the second part of the year the class was at ABC. With the help of committed friends like Patti Arnsdorf, Debbe Noble and others who volunteered much time, energy and money -- the vision grew into reality and SONSHINE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL began. The first year of Sonshine was the 1991/92 year, which began with 19 students and by Christmas break had grown to 30 students and four classroom teachers. Margie, Darlene, and Debbe volunteered their time the first year. The teachers were Patti Arnsdorf, 1st grade; Susan Sparks, 2nd grade; Marcy Cowen, 3rd grade; Barbara Hendrich, 4th/5th/6th combination; Mrs. Beyerle, art; Darlene Maring, computers, music, and BEAM editor; Debbe Noble, P.E. ; and Darlene and Margie shared the role of principal. The school is an independent, non-profit, educational and charitable corporation which is incorporated under the laws of the State of Oregon and recognized officially by the I.R.S. We hold membership in the Association of Christian Schools International. SONSHINE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL ADMITS STUDENTS OF ANY RACE, COLOR, NATIONALITY OR ETHNIC ORIGIN. The school is non-denominational and is dedicated to giving the finest Christian education possible to young people. The premise is that an educational opportunity should be provided in our community that offers an alternative to the humanistic and secular approach. The teachers on our staff view their classroom responsibilities as a ministry and work to fulfill each child's individual needs, both spiritually and academically. THE PURPOSE OF SONSHINE SCHOOL IS THREEFOLD: 1. To provide a solid academic education that is based on the Word of God. 2. To provide instruction which will lead to an appreciation of our American heritage and commitment to the ideals on which our country was founded. 3. To provide the opportunity for all students to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, and to learn and acquire attitudes, conduct, standards, desires, and goals which give glory to God. The school is governed by a board that is responsible for the total operation of the school. STATEMENT OF FAITH WE BELIEVE the Bible to be the unique, inherent, and the only inspired word of God. WE BELIEVE in the trinity. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. WE BELIEVE in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His personal return in power and glory, in His redeeming death upon the cross and in His bodily resurrection. WE BELIEVE in salvation from sin by grace though faith in Jesus Christ. WE BELIEVE that the true church is composed of ALL persons who place their faith in Jesus Christ. We ENCOURAGE all believers to fellowship in the local church of their choice for worship, instruction, evangelism, the Lord's supper and service. PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES Christ is the integrating principle of all knowledge because He created, sustains and redeems both the knower and the object of His knowledge. The world teaches no absolutes -- We teach one and all of life is based on HIM. Thus our objectives are: 1. To provide and educational program which reveals Jesus Christ to the pupil through the Christ-centered curriculum and the lives of Christ honoring teachers and fellow students. 2. To provide an educational program which develops Christian character in the pupil. 3. To provide an educational program which directs each student in development skills, concepts, attitudes and values essential to his progress in becoming a successful Christian citizen. 4. To provide an educational program which is committed to American ideals and patriotism. 5. To provide quality education in regular academic subjects, especially the teaching of phonetic skills. 6. To provide an individualized educational program allowing each student to develop according to his/her greatest potential. 7. To present all subject matter from a God-centered viewpoint. 8. To teach that God is the creator of the universe and of men. 9. To teach that God carries out His purposes through the lives of individuals and nations and in all ages. 10. To encourage each student in the commitment of his life to God through Christ; to encourage growth in such commitment as reflected in concern for others. 11. To show the student his present civic responsibilities and to prepare him for adult responsibility as an American citizen. SPIRITUAL GOALS We operate as a Christian school, not just a school with Christians in it. We aim to know God's plan for education and to seek methods and materials by which His plans are to be implemented. We seek to instill into our students the following: 1. To be receptive to all spiritual and Bible teachings in the school program 2. To give serious consideration to receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. 3. To be loyal to the Lord Jesus Christ. 4. To be submissive, respectful, and loyal to our school, administration, and faculty (Romans 13:11). 5. To be submissive, respectful, and loyal to our parents (Eph. 6:1-2). 6. To be respective of those in the community and to maintain a testimony away from school (Romans 12:17-21). ACADEMIC GOALS Excellence is our key word! ! In every class and in every activity we strive for excellence. The Christian in today's society has no excuse to only exert average effort. For the glorification of the Lord we must strive to excel and to offer to the Lord our best. CURRICULUM We believe in educating the whole student -- mind, body, and spirit. Education is not complete unless it addresses these three areas. We are currently using primarily the ABeka curriculum. It, we believe, is the best Christian traditional education program available in America today. It is built on 25 years of practical common sense and educational know-how. It is published by Pensacola Christian School. This curriculum emphasizes the concept of integration of Biblical principles throughout the whole of the curriculum. In addition to ABeka, we supplement math, current events, some language, and various other subject areas with high quality, carefully scrutinized secular material. Parents are welcome to come to the school and look over the materials that their child will be using. In addition to the traditional classroom instruction, special classes are offered in Spanish, Art, Music, Computers, and Instrumental instruction (band). We are proud of the classes we can offer and make it one of our goals to continue improving and providing excellent curriculum materials to our students here at SONSHINE. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE FOR LINES OF COMMUNICATION Parents wishing to discuss problems or receive clarification in some area should refer to the following guidelines. We encourage all concerned to approach all matters in a Christ honoring fashion keeping Biblical principles foremost in mind and not drawing conclusions before all sides have been heard. Our desire is that issues be resolved satisfactorily with good communication and to please the Lord in all matters. Parents concerned about problems pertaining to classroom and academic activities should contact the respective teacher, explain the problem and listen to the teacher's explanation or solution. If this first step does not lead to a satisfactory resolution, the parent should then contact the administrator. If not resolved, the parent may then contact the school board. Problems concerning such things as tuition, registration, curriculum, and administration should be directed to the administrator. MATTHEW 18 PRINCIPLE FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS: Due to our human nature we may at times irritate others, resulting in misunderstanding or strong disagreement. Jesus gives us His formula for solving person to person problems in Matthew 18: 15-17. 1. Keep the matter confidential. 2. One of the two people involved needs to initiate a face to face dialogue. Most problems are solved at this level. 3. Be forgiving. 4. If there is still a disagreement, the people involved should agree to share the matter with the administrator. I agree to abide by the terms of the financial policy. ______________________________ ________ parent signature date STUDENT CONDUCT/DISCIPLINE Conduct guidelines have been established to help build Christian character and to develop a healthy atmosphere for learning. In setting some necessary rules, we are trying to communicate the principle that freedom is dependent on each of us accepting responsibility. We want to teach a healthy respect for the authority of the teacher, a respect which is fostered by a mutual love. We want to reinforce some Biblical principles through rules, rewards and discipline. Because of our sinful nature (Romans 3:23 and Jer. 17:9) rules are necessary. Through teachers recognizing good behavior, we reinforce the truth that God rewards obedience in His children. By lovingly disciplining students, the teacher reinforces the principle that love results in chastening when needed (Heb. 12: 6-7). It teaches there are consequences to our actions. One of the most important Biblical truths that will be taught is that obedience to God comes out of a love for God. We will encourage students to love God and to receive Christ as Lord and Savior. Students who truly love the Lord Jesus Christ are obedient to Him (John 14:21) and their conduct is seldom a problem. WE BELIEVE THAT PARENTS HAVE THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DISCIPLINE OF THEIR CHILDREN AND THE SCHOOL WILL NOT SPEND A DISPROPORTIONATE AMOUNT OF TIME DEALING WITH DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS. WE HOPE THAT PARENTS AND TEACHERS WILL COOPERATE FULLY AND REINFORCE EACH OTHER IN THIS VERY SENSITIVE AREA. GOOD COMMUNICATION IN BOTH DIRECTIONS IS ESSENTIAL. PHILOSOPHY/METHODS OF DISCIPLINE We at Sonshine Christian School, believe that education is an extension of the home. Discipline should also extend and be supported by the parents. Parents will be notified when serious or repeated offenses occur. When simple preventative measures have failed (timeouts, staying in for recess, etc.), then the parents will be contacted for their input and support. When an offense has been committed, we try to make the punishment fit the behavior. VOLUNTEERS We cannot over-emphasize the importance of parental participation. Our hope is for every parent to play an active role in the operation of our school. Parents are not only encouraged to attend all of the various activities we have during the year, including fund raising activities, but also are encouraged and EXPECTED to volunteer time on a regular basis to the successful functioning of our school. This can be accomplished by listening to children read during reading time, assisting with math and art and other projects, playground and before or after school duties, lunch time supervision, librarian or office assistance, teaching specialized classes if ability dictates, and many more things. THIS IS YOUR SCHOOL, AND IT IS OUR DESIRE THAT YOU BECOME PERSONALLY INVOLVED. If you cannot volunteer time because of employment commitments, we hope that you offer extra support through prayer and financial giving. We also encourage interested relatives, friends, and neighbors to participate in volunteer activities to help our school. We do ask that the volunteer's behavior and dress be in accordance with our standards. We appreciate any volunteers we can get. It is this personalized education that makes our school well rounded, as well as unique, and we want each person to fulfill the ministry that God has called them to do. P.I.P.S. (Parents In Prayer and Service) "Parents in Prayer and Service" is a parent founded, and operated support group. P.I.P.S. meets on a regular basis to pray for the needs of the school, to provide room mothers, to help the fund-raising committee with the implementation of activities, to provide transportation for field trips, and to inform parents about Christian education issues. S C SAMPLE PARENTAL COVENANT S I/We __________________have read and do hereby acknowledge and (parents/guardian) understand that the following are working presuppositions by which Sonshine Christian School is organized and operated: 1). Although children of many Christian denominations make up the Sonshine Christian School student body, nonetheless each student (and parent) enters with the awareness that teaching will be based upon the fundamental presupposition that God is, that He has revealed Himself and His will for us through the Person of His Son the Lord Jesus Christ and through His Living Word, the Bible. At all times the Bible will be presented as without error and inspired by God. 2). Sonshine Christian School accepts the doctrine of "en loco parentis" (or in place of the parents). We emphatically view the school as an extension for both the home and local church with the primary function of assisting the parents in fulfilling their responsibility to "train up their children in the way they are to go." As an extension of the local church no attempt will ever be made to "pull" children away from their home church, but only to encourage their spiritual growth. Furthermore, 1/We agree to: 1). Authorize Sonshine Christian School to exercise its prerogatives as explained above in its role "en loco parents" on behalf of my child, ________________________ (student's full name) I/We understand that this especially and particularly includes permission: a) to discipline as deemed wise and expedient for my child; b) to counsel my children Biblically; c) to be counseled Biblically when matters of my child's welfare arise. (Prov. 19:18; 22:8; 23:13a; 29:17; Ephesians 6:1-2; Colossians 3:20; Hebrews 12:6). 2). Pledge our fullest cooperation to keep doctrinal controversy and denominationalism out of the school at all times. (Romans 13:8-10; I Corinthians 12:12-14; 13:1-13; Galatians 5:13-15, 25-26; Ephesians 4:1-7). 3). Agree that, if our son/daughter should become involved in any trouble with other students in the school or should a misunderstanding arise between my student and the teacher, we will endeavor to settle any grievances quickly and according to scriptural principles (Matthew 18 and Galatians 6). 4). Understand that assessments will be made to cover damage to school property (including breakage of windows, abuse of books etc.). 5). Understand that a child who persists in undesirable conduct or attitude will not be permitted to remain in school to harm others by his influence. I further understand that the standards of the school do not tolerate profanity or obscenity by word or action, or disrespect to school personnel or abuse of the building facilities. 6). Agree to pay the tuition according to the schedule or according to the arrangements that shall be made. I understand that report cards, transcripts, and diplomas will be withheld if required payments are not made or arranged for. I also understand that if my account is 60 days past due, and no arrangements have been made, my child will face disenrollment. 7). Give permission for my child to take part in all school activities, including school sponsored trips away from the school premises and absolve the school from liability to me or my child because of any injury to my child at school or doing any school activity . 8). Agree to help my child with homework when necessary and cooperate with the academic goals of the school. 9). Participate in volunteer activities and to involve myself in any all-school fundraising activities as my be organized by the school Board. 10). Give the school permission (in case of emergency) to provide or obtain appropriate medical help for my child. I have read the above Parental Covenant and fully understand and agree to abide by its conditions. _______________________ _______________________ _______ signature of father or guardian signature of mother or guardian date STUDENT DRESS CODE We believe that because our bodies are the temple of the Lord, the way we present our bodies says a lot about us as a person. The way we dress sets our attitudes about ourselves and about the way respect is communicated toward others. While in a community such as ours, casual clothing is acceptable for most occasions, we do request that all clothing be modest, clean and appropriate. Sloppy or torn clothing or clothing with questionable logos are not permitted. Jewelry and makeup should be worn with taste if at all. For boys, hats are not appropriate indoors. If an item of clothing is questionable, parents will be notified to bring appropriate clothing. On chapel day, girls are to wear dresses or skirts. Culottes are OK if they look like a skirt and not shorts. Boys should wear a shirt and tie or a nice sweater if possible. While dressing up is not mandatory, it is strongly urged and your student will feel out of place if casually dressed on chapel day. Please encourage your child to take pride in his or her appearance each day. Also, make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. PE clothes will be required for middle school students -- as instructed by the middle school teachers. SPORTS, MUSIC AND OTHER SERVICES PE classes: We strive to develop fitness by means of activities which are selected to increase strength and desirable recreational attitudes. We teach a Christian spirit of competition and good sportsmanship as well as an understanding of the activities which will enable the student to achieve and maintain physical fitness. SPORTS: Competitive sports are available for our middle school students . We continue to develop our sports program. We play local area Christian schools and YMCA teams. MUSIC: SCS students experience the discipline of memorizing words, tunes and rhythms and learning about music- its history and makers. Students participate in two musicals each school year and are offered the opportunity of additional participation in performing from time to time. PIANO, INSTRUMENTAL or BAND instruction is also available for an additional fee. Piano fees will be charged directly per lesson by the teacher who will set her own fees. COMPUTER LAB: Currently our computer lab is small but growing. Computer instruction provides a solid introduction to our world of increasing computer usage. One of Sonshine Christian School's goals is to develop our elective program. While we are limited in what we can afford to purchase, we continue to add more and more each year. If you are in a position to help donate equipment or money earmarked for specific items or programs, it will be put to good use. GENERAL INFORMATION SCHOOL HOURS: CLASS BEGINS: 8:30 A.M. CLASS IS DISMISSED: 3:00 P.M. Early bird or after school activity schedules will be set by the teacher in charge of the activity (band, cheerleading, sports, etc.) ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL: Parents are asked to plan their schedules so that students arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to class time. Usually students go directly to their classroom. Students are not to play outdoors without an adult supervisor. We urge you to be prompt so that children can prepare for the school day. Parents may drive in front of the doors to pick up and drop off children. Parking is available in the church lot for those who need to leave their vehicles. If you plan to have someone other than the usual person pick up your child, we must have a note or phone call directly from you. PREARRANGED ABSENCES: Prearranged absences shall be negotiated with the teacher far enough in advance so as to give the teacher sufficient time to plan homework for the child. It is never OK to interrupt a teacher from classtime to gather homework or to conference with him/her. Plan to talk with your child's teacher during his/her break time or before/after school to arrange homework or plan absences. COMMUNICATIONS: We will attempt to keep you informed of school happenings by the way of THE BEAM newsletter which will be sent home weekly. Please join us in prayer for the allocation of funds to increase the smooth operation of our school. The child will be sent to the office, the home will be notified, and the child will await the parent's arrival.
