Midwifery Project in Nicaragua

Midwives need equipment

Cord care kits

Neural tube defects

Please help!

The Bloomington-Posoltega Sister Cities group is funding a midwifery project in Nicaragua. Most women in the town of Posoltega, Nicaragua give birth at home, but midwives lack equipment and supplies due to great poverty in the area. The project aims to supply midwives with equipment such as fetoscopes and scissors, and disposable supplies including latex gloves.

Another goal is to give each midwife cord care kits which can be left with parents after the birth, so that they can keep the baby's umbilical cord stump from becoming infected.

Because several babies were born recently with neural tube defects, another aspect of the midwifery project may be a public education campaign encouraging all women of childbearing age to eat foods readily available in the area that are high in folic acid. Folic acid can help prevent these types of birth defects.

Donations are urgently needed to help fund the midwifery project. The Bloomington-Posoltega Sister Cities group also provides school supplies and helps support the town's medical clinic. To earmark your donation specifically for the midwifery project, enclose a letter with your check or simply write "midwifery project" in the memo space. Donations are greatly appreciated, even small amounts. Please make checks payable to Bloomington-Posoltega Sister Cities and mail to 2213 Sussex Drive, Bloomington, IN 47401.
