From The Chicago Sun Times on October 13, 1996: Fishbone, "Fishbone 101--Nuttasaurusmeg Fossil Fueling The Fonkay" 4 Stars This compilation of hits, b-sides, unreleased tunes, and demo cuts reminds us of how brilliant Fishbone was before they began hunting for commercial success with their lameoid recent music. The band's wild ska-based flailings were ahead of their time, reaching an artistic zenith on the the band's metal-fest "Truth and Soul". This two-disc set is heavy on the ska, featuring incendiary, irresistable cuts like "Party At Ground Zero", which sounds like The Specials with talent, the classic "Ugly", and of course that touching love song "Lyin Ass Bitch". Combining hook-filled rhythms with socially aware lyrics, Fishbone was one of the few bands capible of motivating your feet and mind simultaneously. Vicious chord and tempo changes and aggressive funk mask the depth of "Ma and Pa", a tune about the problems of a dysfunctional family. The second disc consists of rarities, like the 11-song demo that got Fishbone signed to Columbia, including "Skankin To The Beat" and the unreal "Fishbone Is Red Hot". If you hear this music in the store and think it's currentpart of the rock- flavored ska revival, fix that conception, get over to the counter and buy it. Fishbone was the wellspring, a beautiful, skankin flower that, alas, bloomed too early. Kevin M. Williams
