THIS IS A CRITICAL TIME IN HONDURAS!
by Bryan Moore
This past week has brought positive developments in the campaign
to restore democracy to Honduras:
- The U.S. State Department has rescinded all visas to the de facto
president and leaders of the coup government.
- In Geneva, the United Nations Human Rights Council expelled the Honduran
delegation stating that only representatives of the democratically elected
President Manuel Zelaya will be seated.
- The U.S. government reconfirmed the cancellation of military and
developmental aid.
- Honduran President Manuel Zelaya will be one of the highlighted speakers,
along with President Barack Obama, at the opening of the United Nations
General Assembly next week.
- The Organization of American States reiterated that it will not recognize
any attempts by coup leaders to carry through with planned November
elections. This issue will be addressed by the United Nations next week.
- President Barack Obama has agreed to chair the Security Council meeting.
There is considerable hope that the crisis in Honduras will be given
priority by all members.
- Representatives from the IMF stated that Honduran aid is suspended until
further approval by all 186 member states.
