On The Fly is a 13-part television series about fly tying and fishing. Videotaped on the magnificant trout waters of the Pacific Northwest, in Alaska, and even in Outer Mongolia, the program gives the viewer exciting glimpses of the sport of fly fishing. It also provides detailed information on how to tie some of the most popular trout flies, and expert instruction on how to fish them.

The host, Guido Rahr III, is a master fly fisherman, and a fly tyer of unusual skill. He not only knows how to tie and fish the flies, he knows how to explain the process. In each episode, Guido ties one or two flies, then takes the viewer to a spectacular fishing spot for first-hand instruction on how to catch big fish.

The series is available for public access use for the cost of shipping the tapes to and from the channel. If you would like to schedule the program on public access, we will be happy to send you a demo cassette to examine. All programs are 28:00 minutes in length. They can be supplied on 3/4-inch U-Matic or 1/2-inch S-VHS and VHS tape formats.

Host Guido Rahr begins the 13-part series by tying one of the easiest, year-around fish getting flies. He introduces viewers to the wonderful sport of fly fishing.

The Woolly Bugger

Guido ties one of the best all-around flies for catching trout. On an Oregon river, he shows how to catch big fish. Local fly fishing expert Bob Guard gives tips on how to cast a fly.

Dry Flies

Guido teaches the Comparadun and Adams, tried and true dry flies for trout. He shows how to catch big fish with these patterns.

Nymphing

Our host ties a sure-fire nymph, and introduces the viewer to wet fly fishing. On a Central Oregon trout river, he proves that the pattern will catch big fish.

Stonefly Nymph and Dry

Rahr takes a look at one of the best trout flies. He ties the stonefly, as a nymph wet fly, and as an adult dry fly. On a high desert river in Oregon, he brings in some monster trout.

Trout fishing excitement. Guido catches some giant rainbow trout on a memorable trip to Alaska. He then teaches the viewer how to tie the simple flies used to nail the big ones.

Fishing Still Waters

Guido Rahr ties one of the best wet flies for trout. On a very special High Desert Lake, he catches trout that have to be seen to be believed.

Alaska Pink and Chum Salmon

Salmon Fly Pattern

On an Alaska river in late summer, Guido Rahr catches bright Alaska Pink and Chum Salmon. He teaches the viewer to tie the outrageous Disco Girdle Bug, and the Green and Black, a renowned salmon pattern developed by local fishing expert, Bob Guard.

Summer Steelhead

We pursue the elusive summer steelhead in beautiful mountain rivers across the Pacific Northwest. Guido lands some monster fish, and shows the viewer how to tie the Umpqua Special, a famous steelhead fly.

Heavy Water Steelhead

Guido Rahr travels to British Columbia to catch some big winter steelhead. He teaches the viewer to tie the Polar Shrimp, and a fly of his own design, the Scampi. On the river he demonstrates how to fish high, fast, deep winter steelhead waters.

Mongolian Taimen

In a once-in-a-lifetime trip, Guido Rahr travels to Outer Mongolia to fish for the almost legendary Taimen Salmon. These incredible fish have been reported to grow to over 200 pounds! These tapes are the first time Outer Mongolian fishing was seen by American viewers. Guido caught the first Taimen on fly tackle to be reported, on this adventure.

The March Brown Hatch

Host in big river.

Guido teaches you how to catch big trout on one of the earliest and best hatches of the year. When the March Brown Mayflies are rising, so are the big fish. A cold grey day, maybe a little rain, early in the year. Not the best day for fishers, but some of the best for fishing.
