The standard rules for AD&D don't allow for the improvement of a character's ability scores except by magical means. However, that has always seemed a little odd to me. Certainly, a person can become stronger by working out. And they can improve their mind by study. Why not allow this in AD&D? Well, it is a matter of balance. If left unchecked, every character would be a mix of Merlin and Conan...not good. Still, though, perhaps a limited rule allowing improvement of abilities should exist.
Option:
A character can apply 2 Non-weapon Proficiency Slots to improve one ability score by 1 point. The player cannot use initial slots, only earned slots. By doing this, the character forfeits the use of those slots for Non-weapon Proficiencies. Improving an ability this way can not surpass the maximum ability allowed by the character's race.
Subabilites Option:
If using the Subabilities Option from the Skills & Powers: Players' Option book, it is suggested that this rule be altered slightly. A character can apply 1 earned Non-Weapon Proficiency Slot to improve one subability score by 1 point, in the same manner as above. However, no related subabilities can be more than 4 points different, in keeping with the subability rules. Once two related subabilities are both raised 1 point, the ability itself is raised 1 point.
Note, I have not yet play tested this option. Please let me know what you think. In all cases, the DM has final say.
