The Midterm will be an essay which you will write in class. You will be given three broadly-termed essay topics. Of these, you will choose to write up any two on your own. When you come to class for the Midterm, you will be given a paper with two of the three topics. These will be either nos. 1 & 2, 2 & 3, or 1 & 3. You will pick one of these to write on for the Midterm exam.
You may use any source or combination of sources to answer these questions, but you should be able to display a reasonable grasp of the readings we have had so far.
You will not be given these two particular topic choices before the Midterm.
No images will be shown and you may not use any notes. I will provide the bluebooks you will use.
If you leave the room for any reason during the Midterm you will not be allowed to return to finish the exam.
When you have finished the Midterm, you will need to turn it in to me with the essay question paper inside your bluebook. If you do not return the original essay question paper, you will not receive credit for the Midterm.
The Midterm topics will be posted here at the appropriate moment.
Finally, the moment is appropriate. Here they are:
- Discuss the development of Venetian architecture. You should concentrate on either churches or palaces (including palace-type buildings). You may wish to consider the influence of Byzantine architecture, contrasts with other Italian architecture, or/and the effects of the early architecture of Jacopo Sansovino.
- Discuss the characterization of either women or men in Venetian art. You should use religious as well as secular art.
- Discuss the idea of the "Otherness" of the Venetians.
