Description The Methods of Art History class is intended to introduce students to the field of art history through the study of its historiography and certain critical approaches. Students will demonstrate their new understanding of the field of art history by their contributions to the seminar and by writing a longer length, semi-research paper.
Prerequisite Junior Standing or above. Students should have some experience writing a paper on a topic related to the history of art, but those without such experience are welcome also.
Books
- Required: Bradford Collins, ed. Twelve Views of Manet's Bar.
- Optional: From Abacus to Zeus, by James Smith Pierce. 6th ed., 2000; or any other guide to art history or art history writing that you may prefer. Examples include A Short Guide to Writing about Art by Sylvan Barnet, any edition; Writing about Art by Henry Sayre, 4th edition; or Joshua C. Taylor's Learning to Look, 1983.
- Also: Selected Articles may be assigned.
- Also: Students will be asked to look over and provide critiques of certain art history textbooks. This will be done in small groups-2 or 3 students will confront, for example, Gardner's Art Through the Ages.
Course Requirements
- Active Participation in the workings of the Seminar: come each time prepared to contribute as required to move the class along. This will be worth 10% of the grade in the course.
- Over the course of the semester the student will propose, research, present, and write a paper of at least semi-research type. This will be worth 40% of the grade.
- For undergraduates this will be about 12-15 pages in length; for graduates the length will be about 20 pages.
- Reading, discussing, and writing about the text. This will be worth 40% of the grade.
- Art History Textbook discussion. This will count 10% of the grade.
ATTENDANCE is required at all classes is required. Lateness may, at the discretion of the instructor, also be counted as an absence. You may miss up to TWO classes unexcused classes without penalty. After that, you will be penalized by a reduction of 5% in your final grade for each day missed.
- EXCUSED ABSENCES ARE THE FOLLOWING:
- Illness (documented)
- Death or severe illness in the family (documented)
- Required participation in a university sport or similar activity (documented)
- Required military service (documented)
- The discretion of the instructor. Note that this does not include trips to the airport, vacations, and the like.
