AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME

Each year, up to 12 Rome Prizes are awarded in the fields of Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies and Modern Italian Studies. Rome Prize winners reside at the Academy's 11-acre center in Rome and receive room and board and a study. Both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral awards are available. Two-year residencies are awarded to pre-doctoral candidates whose proposal investigates the history of art and architecture. THE AMERICAN CENTER OF ORIENTAL RESEARCH (AMMAN)

The Kress Fellowship In The Art and Archaeology of Jordan offers one or more three- to six-month fellowships for pre-doctoral students completing dissertation research in an art historical topic. History of art is defined to include: art history, archaeology, architectural history, and in some cases classical studies. Applicants must be Ph.D. candidates and U.S. citizens or foreign nationals who have matriculated at U.S. institutions. The maximum award for six months is $14,000. Deadline is 1 February.

AMERICAN FRIENDS OF THE MAURITSHUIS

"The American Friends of the Mauritshuis offers grants in the field of art history to support an academic project devoted to the study of Dutch art from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. Applicants must hold an M.A. in art history and must be working toward a Ph.D. Grants range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the financial requirements and merits of the project. Applicants are invited to submit a letter with a detailed description of the project and two letters of recommendation to:

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF INDIAN STUDIES

JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS : Available to doctoral candidates at U.S. colleges and universities in all fields of study. Junior Research Fellowships are specifically designed to enable doctoral candidates to pursue their dissertations research in India. Junior Research Fellows establish formal affiliation with Indian universities and Indian research supervisors. Awards are available for up to eleven months. Fellowships for four or less have significant restrictions. Fellowships for six months or more may include limited coverage for dependents if funds are available. AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS

Awards for Advanced Study in Greece. Given to graduate students who have completed the BA but not the PHD before entering the School. Preference is given to those who have completed at least one year of graduate study. A Regular Member receives $8,840 plus fees, room, and board for the year. THE AMERICAN-SCANDINAVIAN FOUNDATION

Awards are open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who will have completed their undergraduate education at the time their overseas program begins. AMERICAN WOMEN'S CLUB IN SWEDEN

Annual. "The scholarship which is based on academic excellence, is awarded in the form of a travel grant for $1,500. The grant was initiated to cover the cost of a round-trip airplane ticket between the US and Sweden. In order to qualify for the AWC Scholarship, the applicant must be currently living in the USA, 18 years or older, an American female citizen and accepted for a period of study or research at a Swedish educational institute during 2007. Deadline for 2007 applications was March 31, 2007."

BRITISH FEDERATION OF WOMEN GRADUATES

"The charitable foundation offers grants to help women graduates with their LIVING expenses (not fees) while registered for study or research at an approved institution of higher education in Great Britain...Women graduates from Britain and overseas are eligible to apply...The amount of the Foundation Grant will be decided by the Grants Committee, but will not exceed #2,500." BRITISH MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIPS

For two years of study at a British University: open to U.S. citizens under the age of 26 who hold a B.A. degree. Support tends to average $24,000 per year. THE BRITISH SCHOOL AT ROME

Rome Scholarships and Rome Awards for periods from four to nine months. N. B.: Open to those of "British or Commonwealth birth, or have been working professionally or studying at postgraduate level for the last three years in the UK or Commonwealth." Generally, support is offered for "Ancient, Medieval & Later Italian Studies...for higher research in the archaeology, art history, history or literature of Italy." CAMARGO FOUNDATION

Call for Applications : Artistic and Academic Fellowships. "The Camargo Foundation welcomes applications from composers, writers, and visual artists pursuing specific projects and from scholars pursuing studies in the humanities and social sciences relating to French and francophone cultures. The interdisciplinary residency program is intended to give fellows the time and space they need to realise their projects. The FoundationÍs hillside campus overlooks the Mediterranean Sea in Cassis, France; it includes thirteen furnished apartments, a reference library, and three art/music studios. Fellows are provided with accommodation on campus and a stipend of $2,500. Residencies are one semester (either early-September to mid-December or mid-January to the end of May). Qualified candidates from all countries and nationalities are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is January 12 for either semester of the following academic year. COUNCIL OF EUROPEAN STUDIES

Pre-dissertation fellowship of $3,000 to fund short-term, exploratory research in Western or Southern Europe in order to determine the viability and define the scope of proposed doctoral dissertations. While not specifically for art historians, some grants in this area have been awarded. Generally, to be competitive with other applications, projects in art history should reach well beyond that discipline, incorporating perspectives/methodologies from cultural history, anthropology, or sociology. FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF MESOAMERICAN STUDIES (FAMSI) ANNUAL GRANT COMPETITION

[Web site much expanded; follow the links for a full description of awards, eligibility, etc] Grants are intended to provide assistance for scholarly investigations of PreColumbian Cultures of Mesoamerica (limited to present Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador). Two programs: Support for a year abroad and for graduate and postgraduate study and research in Poland: Each year the Kosciuszko Foundation selects and recommends American students and scholars to the Polish Ministry of National Education for scholarships made available through the Foundation's Exchange Program with Poland. These awards are for the Year Abroad Program at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and for the Graduate and Postgraduate Studies and Research in Poland Program at numerous institutions of higher learning throughout Poland. RENAISSANCE SOCIETY OF AMERICA

RSA awards small research grants to predoctoral students. The primary purpose of these grants is to enable scholars to study research materials such as archival documents, manuscripts, rare printed editions, works of art,and major collections of primary and secondary sources that are essential to the applicants research but unavailable nearby. SCUOLA LEONARDO DA VINCI

Study Italian in Florence, Siena, or Rome. "Scuola Leonardo da Vinci is [an] Academic institute located in the historic center in Florence, Italy, offers semester and summer study abroad programs. Take courses in language, arts, and humanities with transferable college credits. Learn italian while learning the italian culture. Scuola Leonardo da Vinci awards 40 school or university students scholarships ("Borse di Studio") entitling them to a 100 percent reduction in the cost of a four-week standard course, not including accommodation... and we are recognised by the Italian Ministry of education." SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS IN CONSERVATION OF MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

"The Smithsonian's Office of Research Training and Services (ORTS) has announced one-year fellowships for recent graduates of masters programs in art and archaeological conservation or for conservation scientists to conduct research and gain further training at the Smithsonian in the conservation of objects in its collections. The fellowship begins in the fall of 2007. A stipend of $30,000 is being offered plus allowances. The prospective fellow must first contact the conservator or scientist with whom he or she would like to work. If the potential supervisor confirms that candidacy is suitable, application must be made through ORTS. SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE STUDY IN FLORENCE

The Florence Graduate Program in Renaissance Art offers the M.A. in Art History through a program that combines study at Syracuse University in the U.S. and at their Florence campus. The Fine Arts Department, in association with the Graduate School of Syracuse University, each year awards four Florence Fellowships which include full tuition and a stipend towards living expenses. UNIVERSITA INTERNAZIONALE DELL' ARTE

THE YALE CENTER FOR BRITISH ART: Pre-doctoral Fellowships in British Art

JUNIOR FELLOWSHIPS: "Three-month fellowships in the UK (based at the Paul Mellon Centre in London) or the US (based at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven) are offered to scholars already engaged in doctoral research on a British art-historical topic. Candidates may be of any nationality but normally must be enrolled in a graduate program at an American university (for study in the UK) or at a non-American university (for study in the us). Junior fellows receive a monthly stipend of 1,500 pounds or $1,500 and a return airfare. Applications, outlining the field of study, progress made so far, how the fellowship will aid research, and preferred dates of tenure, should be submitted in triplicate, along with a curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, to the Director of Studies at the Paul Mellon Centre by 15 January 1999."

DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS: "To encourage younger scholars of promise into the field of British art history, three doctoral fellowships have been established-two to be held at British universities and one at Yale University. The dissertation topic and the primary area of research must be British art or architecture. Applicants for the British fellowships must submit the endorsement of the chair or head of the department in which they have been accepted. The British fellowship award is 9,500 pounds per annum for a maximum of three years. Applications outlining the projected field of research should be submitted in triplicate, along with a curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, to the Director of Studies at the Paul Mellon Centre by 15 January. Applicants for the Yale fellowship must apply directly to the Ph.D. program of the Department of the History of Art, Yale University. The Yale fellowship pays tuition and provides a living allowance for a maximum of four years. Applications outlining the projected field of research should be submitted in triplicate, along with a curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, to the Director of Graduate Studies, Department of the History of Art, Yale University, P. PAUL MELLON CENTRE ROME FELLOWSHIP:"In conjunction with the British School at Rome, the Paul Mellon Centre offers a six-month fellowship open to scholars working on Grand Tour subjects or in the field of Anglo-Italian cultural and artistic relations. The fellowship provides full residential accommodation at the British School at Rome and offers a monthly stipend of 1,000 pounds plus travelto and from Rome. Applications, outlining the field of research and the importance to this study of residence in Rome, should be submitted in triplicate, along with a curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, to the Director of Studies at the Paul Mellon Centre by 15 January."

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR NETHERLANDIC [SIC] RESEARCH RESEARCH GRANTS

"The AANS is offering one grant of $2,000 in support of a one year graduate research project in the field of Netherlandic studies, to be conducted in the Netherlands or Belgium. ATTINGHAM SUMMER SCHOOL

"The Attingham Summer School is an intensive, 3-week course that travels to three different parts of England. Participants visit about 25 British Country houses, both public and private, and have special access to collections and specialists. From a large number of applicants from many countries, participants are chosen who have an architectural, historical, conservationist or academic background, or a close involvement with the fine and decorative arts. Applications should be available at the website. Some scholarships are available. Two other programs -- the 9 day Attingham study week and the 9 day Royal Collections Studies program, based at Windsor Castle -- are also offered.
