A BERNINI BIBLIOGRAPHY

This page lists titles related to our course. These are of two types:

• Books on reserve in the Art Library for our course, plus the Blue Binder with articles;
• A list of books, usually not on reserve, but quite possibly of interest to those either going to Rome at some time or who would just like to read about Rome. (Mostly posted: 2 April)

There will be a link to the books currently on reserve at the Art Library; more will be added through the term so check this link frequently. The reserve books include copies of the required texts and other titles that I think might be of use or of interest to you. The art history majors who have been privileged with the honor of writing a paper probably will find books and articles of interest here.

Note that there is also a blue binder (I'll get the official name as soon as it is set up) with some articles of the same types as mentioned above

• Eleanor Clark. Rome and a Villa. First published circa 1951, amazon.com says that it will be republished this year. Rome in the years just after WWll.
• Francis Haskell and Nicholas Penny. Taste and the Antique: the Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900.

• Henry James. Daisy Miller A sad story about a wild American girl who goes to Rome and does all sorts of things you're not supposed to do in 1878. Online copy with the original illustrations.

• Irving Lavin. Bernini and the Unity of the Visual Arts. Oxford and New York, 1980.
• Torgil Magnuson. Rome in the Age of Bernini. 2 vols. 1982. This is our course as if on the graduate level and only about Bernini.
• Tod A. Marder. Bernini's Scala Regia at the Vatican Palace. New York, 1997.

• Georgina Masson. The Companion Guide to Rome. revised by Tim Jepson. Bury St. Edmonds, 1998. You're going to Rome? This is the book. One criticism: the bibliography is pretty worthless.
• Vernon Hyde Minor. Baroque and Rococo : Art and Culture. New York, 1999. An excellently done overview of the periods.
• Jennifer Montagu. Alessandro Algardi. New Haven and London, 1985. This beautifully-done book is credited with prompting a revival of interest in Algardi.
• Jennifer Montagu. Roman Baroque Sculpture : the Industry of Art. New Haven, 1989.
• Robert T. Petersson. The Art of Ecstasy: Teresa, Bernini, and Crashaw. New York, 1974.
• Catherine Puglisi. Caravaggio. One of the most recent, and most praised, of the many biographies of Caravaggio. The art library cancelled the order for this title. You ask them why.
