On the Course: This is a survey of major monuments and trends in the history of art from about 1800 to about 1935, or from David to mid-career Picasso. Students who attend lectures and study faithfully will achieve a sufficient knowledge of the art of these periods to pursue further coursework in these areas. They will also have a good background for the second course in this series, Art 212, which covers modern and contemporary art. We will be concentrating on painting, with some consideration of sculpture and architecture.
REQUIRED Text: John Canaday, Mainstreams of Modern Art, New York, 1981. Currently there are a number of used copies available in the bookstore; check also at regional used book stores such as Smith Family. Note that copies of this and some helpful related titles are on permanent reserve in the library.
