As discussed in class, those who wish to augment their Midterm grade may write a short paper on a particular topic. This paper is due in class on a particular date to be given; no late papers will be accepted. This is NOT a requirement; this is an extra opportunity for those who wish to try to raise their grades. This paper will be worth a maximum of 25 points. In addition, the paper will need to be written according to certain guidelines.
The Topic and Writing About It
For the topic you are to write your interpretation of a work of modern art, whether from our text, from a current news story, or using a work of modern art you find either here or in another city, such as New Orleans. To shape your essay you will use your notes from the lectures, the text, and your own interpretations to produce a short paper, 3 to 4 pages typewritten. The basics for the mechanics of the paper are:
- The paper needs to have margins no greater than one inch on all sides, no more than double spacing, and a typeface no greater than 12 point.
- No sources other than the text, the lectures, and your own views may be used. (No Wikipedia!) No exceptions. All references to the text must be cited in this way: "(The author) writes that Van Gogh's landscapes are his most important subject." (345-346) The numbers refer to the pages where this information can be found. You must indicate these sources; not to do so could be plagiarism.
