On the Course: This is a survey of major monuments and trends in the history of Italian Renaissance architecture from about 1300 to about 1575, or from the Duomo of Florence to il Gesu' in Rome. In fact We will range all over Italy, considering the wide variety of building types and styles, including late medieval churches of Tuscany to the villas of Palladio, to the palaces and later churches of Rome, to give the most schematic idea of our travels. An enormous amount of work has been done on the architecture of this period, and this course is set up to give you a good background both on the traditional and the new approaches. Students who attend lectures and study faithfully will achieve a sufficient knowledge of the art of these periods to pursue further coursework in these areas.

REQUIRED Texts: We will have two for you to purchase: 1)Architecture in Italy: 1400-1500, by Ludwig H. Heydenreich, rev. by Paul Davies, Yale, 1996; and 2)Architecture in Italy: 1500-1600 by Wolfgang Lotz, rev. by Deborah Howard, Yale, 1996. There will be individual readings which you will find either on the Web site or in the Course Reader. Note that copies of these and some helpful related titles are on permanent reserve in the library.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Course Requirements: EXAMS There will be two midterms, a final, and a paper. Each is worth 25% of your grade. ATTENDANCE is required, and may be taken on the whim of the instructor. Missed classes will be counted against your final grade. Lateness may, at the discretion of the instructor, also be counted as an absence. NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN.
