HAMMER MUSEUM INTERNSHIPS 2008

In "Haines Alaska is recruiting for a 3-month internship with a flexible start day from May to September 2008. The Hammer Museum is a non-profit, private entity and the world's only museum dedicated to hammers. Its mission is to provide a view of the past and a history of technology through the use of man's first tool. There are over 1500 hammers on display, ranging from Roman times to the present. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Interns may work on one or more of the following projects: cataloging and researching the museum collection, taking digital photographs of artifacts; website development; assisting with an inventory of the museum collection; public speaking, and newsletter development. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Strong writing, research and collections care skills. Strong organizational, multitasking and people skills. Knowledge of standard office computer skills, including Past Perfect database software and word processing or a desire to learn them. Ability to work independently and on detailed tasks. Knowledge of the history of technology a plus. Degree or expected degree in history, education, museum studies, humanities or a related field. An adventurous spirit. COMPENSATION: The internship comes with a $100 per week stipend and basic housing is provided. Haines is a wonderful Alaskan community with a population of around 2000 and a breathtaking landscape. SOUTHWEST MUSEUM/AUTRY NATIONAL CENTER SUMMER 2005 INTERNSHIPS

"Subject to availability, internships are available in the following departments: Collections Management, Curatorial, and EducationInternships with the Southwest Museum/Autry National Center are full time structured learning experiences. The experience must be relevant to the intern's academic and professional goals, and to research and museum activities of the Institution. An internship is performed under the direct supervision of the Southwest Museum staff. Qualifications: Internship opportunities are available for undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students who have an overall G.P.A. of 3.0 or its equivalent. MUSEUM INTERNSHIP IN NUMISMATICS: " The American Numismatic Association Money Museum is the largest exhibiting museum of its kind in the United States. Located in Colorado Springs, CO, the Money Museum is open and free to the public with one permanent and four rotating exhibit galleries. The Money Museum collection includes over 250,000 numismatic items including coins, paper notes, medals and related items. The Money Museum is located in the same facility as the Dwight N. FORT MORGAN MUSEUM SUMMER 2006 INTERNSHIP

"Start date: June 19)--240 hours maximum--stipend. The Fort Morgan Museum is an AAM accredited museum on the eastern plains of Colorado that interprets the history of Fort Morgan, Morgan County, and the surrounding area. Focuses include Glenn Miller, Plains Indians, frontier military, irrigation, farming, and business. A town of a little over 10,000 people, Fort Morgan is the county seat of Morgan County. ROME AREA HISTORY MUSEUM SUMMER INTERNSHIP 2006

"Archives Intern: Duties: The intern will complete a Disaster Preparedness Plan for the Museum. The intern will process (inventory, catalog, index, and re-house) two major archival collections: photos collected by two generations of the Wyatt family, and the research notes and articles of Roger Aycock a local reporter and author of All Roads to Rome. Data entry of collections records in PastPerfect software. Qualifications: Previous experience working with archival collections is required. Must be computer savvy and able to multi-task. Internships are offered in the Art Institute's many departments throughout the year and enable students to gain first hand experience in their areas of interest or study. Interns, working under the guidance of curators or department heads, assist in routine departmental work that ranges from special projects and research to clerical support. Interns are usually junior or senior level college students, or graduate students; however, in some cases, those individuals with related work will be considered. "Paid Internship in Central llinois. Terms of position: 6 month internship starting in May. Internship extension possible. Regular work week plus alternating weekend duty with compensatory time off. Location: Homestead Prairie Farm, a circa 1860 living history house museum, is at the edge of the Decatur city limits. The museum is located on the grounds of the Rock Springs Nature Center (a 1300 acre riverine forest and prairie park). It is administered by the staff of the Macon County Conservation District with assistance from volunteers. Staff offices are in the nearby Rock Springs Visitor Center. MONTICELLO COLLEGE FOUNDATION INTERNSHIP

"he Monticello College Foundation Internship in Museum Education provides a challenging opportunity to work closely with museum educators, exhibits staff, and curators in a museum of natural history, anthropology, and art. The program is designed for candidates who wish to explore a career in the field of museum education. The Monticello Intern helps coordinate the day-to-day operations of "A Place for Discovery," a hands-on children's gallery, including the gallery's 45 volunteers. The Monticello Intern also assists with other museum education programs including school groups, monthly children's programs, and special events.

"Requirements: a Bachelor's degree in education, anthropology, natural science, museum studies, history, or art; career interest in museum education; experience working with the public; and ability to use a personal computer. Teaching experience or Master's degree a plus. Flexibility, maturity, caring personality, and enthusiasm for working with children and volunteers - especially retirees - are very important. The internship will run from September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009. There is some flexibility in start and end dates. Monthly stipend of $1565 plus benefits package including fully-paid medical and life insurance, holidays, vacation, personal business days, and sick time.

"The IMA offers internships for undergraduates, graduates and recent graduates each year during the spring and summer. Interns selected to participate in the program gain practical experience, marketable skills and a broad exposure to museum work. Internships are potentially available within the curatorial, development/membership, education, marketing, registration and visitor services departments. Interns participate in the ongoing work of the department to which they are assigned and will be expected to complete a project or some portion of a major project. Individual responsibilities are determined by the educational background and work experience of the intern, as well as the needs of the department. INDIANAPOLIS MUSEUM OF ART: ALLEN WHITEHILL CLOWES CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP

"...is pleased to announce a nine-month curatorial fellowship. The fellowship supports scholarly research related to the Clowes Collection at the IMA and provides curatorial training in the field of European painting and sculpture. The Clowes Fellow is fully integrated into the curatorial division of the Museum and has duties comparable to those of an assistant curator, ranging from collection research and management to exhibition development and implementation. To be eligible for the fellowship, the applicant must be enrolled in a graduate course of study leading to an advanced degree or be a recent degree recipient (within the last two years). Applicants must demonstrate scholarly excellence and promise, as well as a strong interest in the museum profession. U.S. citizenship is not required.

"The Clowes Fellow will receive a stipend of $16,000 and an educational travel allowance of $2,000. Housing is provided in a scholar's residence on the grounds of the museum. VESTERHEIM NORWEGIAN-AMERICAN MUSEUM SUMMER 2007 PAID INTERNSHIPS

"Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum is offering two paid collections internships for the summer of 2007. Vesterheim, located in Decorah, IA, embodies the living heritage of Norwegian immigrants to America. The Museum houses over 24,000 artifacts, which include large samplings from the fine, decorative, and folk arts, and the tools and machinery of early agriculture, lumbering, and other immigrant industries. Interns will work directly on a collections relocation project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Vision Iowa Program. The project entails the inventory, transport, condition reporting, photography, and documentation of 10,000 objects to be housed in the newly renovated Bauder-Landsgard Collections Study Center. Ideal candidates should have interest, knowledge, or experience with handling historic artifacts in a museum setting, and should have completed some course work in museum studies. SANTA FE TRAIL CENTER MUSEUM & RESEARCH LIBRARY

"...in Larned, Kansas is currently taking applications for a curatorial intern for the summer of 2007. Applicants must be actively seeking a degree in history, museum studies, public history, or in a related field, at either an undergraduate or graduate level. The internship will focus primarily on collections management responsibilities-including, but not limited to, cataloging, marking, and photographing objects, utilizing collections management software, assisting with exhibits, providing research support, and grant writing. Candidates must be detail oriented, reliable, and interested in promoting the care and preservation of museum artifacts.

The intern must complete a minimum of 150 hours of work. Date and work schedule are negotiable but the internship must be completed no later than September 1, 2007. They offer both fellowships and internships for graduate students. "The Society's collections are especially strong for the frontier, antebellum, and Civil War eras of Kentucky history. The fellowships are designed to encourage research in all aspects of the history of Kentucky and the regions of the Ohio Valley and the Upper South. Applicants should indicate how The Filson's collections are relevant to their research topics and will have the opportunity to present the results of their research to scholars and the general public as appropriate. Fellows as well as interns are expected to be in continuous residence at The Filson. Application deadlines for all fellowships and internships are 15 October and 15 February each year. "Montpelier, the General Henry Knox Museum, an historic house museum in midcoast Maine, is pleased to post its three paid internships for 2008. The museum, a reconstruction of the 1794 mansion built by the country's first Secretary of War, houses an important collection of Federal Period furniture and decorative arts, as well as primary and secondary resources related to the economic development and settling of midcoast Maine. The museum has a permanent staff of two FT employees and over 60 active volunteers, and offers a very active range of programs, classes and events during the summer. INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING INNOVATION

The Institute for Learning Innovation, an Annapolis, MD-based non-profit, offers internships and fellowships three times per year: spring, summer, and fall. The Institute is a non-profit organization that describes, assesses and advances learning both in free-choice settings and in the formal educational system.

"Every summer since 1956, college students have experienced the world of Historic Deerfield, a museum of New England history and art in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The nine-week living-learning program offers a chance to take part in the behind-the-scenes workings of a museum, to study New England material life using the Historic Deerfield collections and historic houses, and to join staff in a thorough investigation of early American history and material life." HISTORIC NEW ENGLAND (SPNEA) 2005/2006

Kitchen Exhibition Research Fellowship They "seek an advanced graduate student or research professional to conduct a comparative study of eighteenth-century Essex County probate inventories, focusing on the town of Newbury, Massachusetts, to determine how kitchens were typically furnished. The fellow will present the findings in a report, which will be used for an exhibition on the history of kitchens in America and for the interpretation of the kitchen at the Coffin House, one of Historic New England's historic properties. Annual? "The Department of Art of the Ancient World at the MFA, Boston is pleased to announce the inauguration of a Niarchos Classical Art Curatorial Internship. The internship will be project-based and offer hands-on experiences in a range of activities, which may include object handling, documentation, installations, conservation treatments, recording and archival work, and presentations to the public. Projects will be determined on the basis of the applicant?s expertise and the needs of the Department.

Applications are now being accepted for the internship, which will begin in Autumn 2007 and last for two months. "Jeannine Rioux Intern. Jeannine Rioux, a long-time supporter of Naumkeag, was an enthusiastic student of history. The Jeannine Rioux Internship is made possible by her friends and family as a way to help other students learn more about American history. Founded in 1891 by landscape architect Charles Eliot, The Trustees of Reservations is a member-supported, nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable organization that preserves, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts and protects special places across the state. The Trustees protects over 35,000 acres of land plus a range of historic structures, including Naumkeag, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

"The exact nature of the project(s) will be decided after discussions with staff at the start of the internship. Qualifications: Be enrolled in an accredited graduate level degree program for museum studies or similar. Experience developing interpretive programs and an understanding of American history are all desirable. The successful candidate needs to be willing to collaborate with staff and volunteers and have a sense of humor. The Jeannine Rioux Intern will report to the Superintendent of the Stockbridge Management Unit, and work with the Western Regional Historic Resources Manager and Naumkeag's Historic Site Administrator. MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ARTS

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts offers many volunteer internships for individuals considering or pursuing careers in museum work. All candidates with skills, interests, or experiences relevant to museum work are eligible. Internships may range from one to twelve months in length, with a minimum time commitment of twenty hours per week expected. Intern positions are typically project-oriented within a specific department. There are frequent classroom components which acquaint interns with various functions, programs, departments, and staff of the museum and/or relate to the intern experience. Students often arrange academic credit for their experience through their college or university.

The availability of internships is determined by the needs of individual departments throughout the year, within the limitations of staff and space availability, exhibition schedules and the varying potential for challenging intern projects. Candidates may consider internships in several areas of the museum, including the Curatorial, Education, Marketing and Communications, and Development Divisions. "The Olmsted County History Center will be conducting an inventory of its three-dimensional (3D) collection as part of its commitment to the Rochester Area Foundation (RAF) grant. This internship will place an emphasis on collections management practice. There will also be opportunities to gain experience in exhibit planning and installation. The supervisor, the Curator of Collections, will discuss with the Intern the necessary requirements for fulfilling the internship.
