List of Essay Questions for the Final Exam
ITALIAN RENAISSANCE SCULPTURE
EXAM DATE: MONDAY, MAY 10 FROM NOON TO 3 P.M. VOORHEES 104

Again, on the Final Exam:

• The first part will consist of FIVE pairs of slide comparisons. They will be taken from the material studied after the Midterm.
• The second part of the exam will consist of the essay. This is described below.

The basic format for the essay question will be exactly like that of the Midterm. Below are three questions. Two of these will be given as part of the final exam; you will write on one of them. As you are being given these questions over two weeks in advance, I will expect that your essay will be considered and thoughtful.

In writing these, you will want to use not only the basic texts for this course (Olson, Avery, and Hibbard) but also select from the additional readings, including those that were and are on hold.

• One of the great innovations of the Italian Renaissance was the revival and development of portraiture. Using at least three examples by at least three different sculptors in the fifteenth century and at least three examples by at least three different sculptors in the sixteenth century, trace these developments over 100 years. You may use any type of portrait sculpture: busts, medals, monuments, etc.

• Describe the Renaissance fascination with ancient art. Again, use at least three different examples by at least three different sculptors from the fifteenth century and the same for the sixteenth. Consider origins, ambitions, changes.

• Donatello and Michelangelo are by common consent the two greatest sculptors of the Italian Renaissance. Write an essay discussing their importance, focusing on Michelangelo's use and interpretations of Donatello's sculpture.
