THE FINAL

The Final will be much like the Midterm. It will cover material from Chapter 8 to the end of the course. The first part of the Midterm will consist of five pairs of slide comparisons, presented just as they have been on the past quizzes.

The second part will consist of an essay, conducted as was the Midterm. You will find three broadly-termed essay questions (see below). You will need to prepare two of these; on the day of the Final you will be given an exam with two of the three essays--you won't know which two in advance. Of these you will write up one.

For each question, you will need to use 6-8 works of art, described thoroughly--don't just give me a list. It is usually best to discuss these in chronological order. If there is a named artist, please give his or her name.

Date of the Final:

Monday, May 9, 2005: 12:45-2:45. No early exams will be given.
Note: If during the exam you leave the room for any reason you will not be allowed back in.

The Final Essay questions

  1. Discuss manuscript illumination over the period of the 5th century to the 15th century from the examples in the text and those discussed in class.

  2. Discuss Medieval sculpture (you may include reliquaries).

  3. Describe how Gothic architecture differs from Romanesque architecture. Give precise examples of plan, elevation, and decoration.
