There will be six quizzes in this class. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped and your final grade on the quiz component will be determined by the other five. The quizzes will run this way:
The First Quiz will be on Chapters One and Two. This will be given Monday, Feb. 7, and Tuesday, Feb. 8. You will take the quiz in the section of the course in which you are enrolled.
The Second Quiz will be given Monday, February 21 in the MWF1 and MW classes and Tuesday, February 22 in the TTh class. It will comprise four images, shown in class and illustrated in our text. For each, you need to tell me me what the image is (identification) and then respond to a question about the work. You need to write 2-3 full sentences relating to the work shown. These are worth five points each for a total of twenty points.
The Third Quiz HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO Wednesday, March 16 in the MWF1 and MW classes and Thursday, March 17 in the TTh class. This will be a short-answer quiz, and will cover Chapters 16 and 17.
- There will be two (ie,quiz nos. 4 and 5) out-of-class projects that will count as a quiz. These cannot be missed. One is the artist lecture report, which is described at the Newsletters site.
- THE LAST QUIZ will be another 2-page essay in response to the movie I have yet to select. This will be due Monday May 2, for the MWF1 and MW classes, and Tuesday, May 3 for the TTh class.
- The second out-of-class project quiz will be the essay on a story, described below.
- The artist lecture paper and the essay on a story can be handed in at any time, with the following provisos:
- The artist lecture paper is due one week from the lecture itself.
- The Essay on a Story is due Monday, April 18 or Tuesday April 19.
Essay on a Story
Please choose one of the following stories for your essay. Please remember that you are to write an essay, not a plot summary, of the story or book. You need to choose only from the titles listed below.
Your essay is to be typed, 2-3 pages in length, with 12 point type and one-inch margins all around on the paper.
You may complete the essay and hand it in at any time during the course, but on or before the due date of Monday April 18 / Tuesday April 19.
The Stories : Choose One
- "If the Impressionists had been Dentists" by Woody Allen from his collection Without Feathers. This is on reserve in our library. Ask for it at the Circulation Desk. This story is very short, so I am expecting to see rather more effort. You will, for example, have to acquaint yourself sufficiently with the works of the Impressionists/Post-Impressionists that are being parodied that you can explain the satire. Why is making them dentists funny?
- The Birthday of the Infanta by Oscar Wilde. From 1905. Here is a link to a photo of Las Meninas
Consider: how has Wilde used the painting here? Note that the story is not about the painting. Which characters in the painting can be found in the story? How has he contrasted grim reality (the real life of the court) with elements of fantasy and idealization?
- "Rembrandt's Hat." by Bernard Malamud. This also is in the library reserve collection. If you can't find it some reason, the library owns it in a collection of Malamud's short stories, called, surprise, Rembrandt's Hat. It is a story of conflict between an artist and an art historian in a college art department. What has happened, and why?
- Henry James. Daisy Miller. 1892; with author's Preface of 1907. An online edition of James' famous short novel of a naive young American in Rome. Includes the original illustrations. You can read it online or print it out. More about this later.
- "William Blake" chapter from Kenneth Clark's Romantic Rebellion, on reserve in our library. Use this and previous discussion of Blake to compose an essay on the phenomenon that was this artist. For those who would like to see how art historians work. More on this anon.
- A S. Byatt. The Matisse Stories.
- Guy Davenport. Da Vinci's Bicycle. Also : Tatlin.
I have yet to track these last two down. If I can't find them, you can choose from the other titles.
