School Gardens of Lane County

Brattain Elementary School: 425 10th St, Springfield (Springfield District)
Brattain has been gardening with SGP since fall 2003. Under the leadership of community volunteer Hanalei Rozen, many garden beds have been developed along the entire east edge of the school grounds for use by school classes and an afterschool garden program. Most of the beds are planted in flowers and some in vegetables. A native plant area is being planned.

Cesar Chavez Elementary/Family School: 1510 W 14th, Eugene (4J District)
In the fall of 2004, this new school building opened at the site of the former Patterson School building. Chavez School is a combination of the students from the former Patterson and Westmoreland Schools. Family School, which had shared the Patterson building, lost its garden in the reconstruction, so a new garden space was put into the courtyard by the landscape architects. Both schools began working with SGP in the fall of 2004 to utilize this garden space. In 2005, SGP organizd the building of a new garden shed through the United Way Day of Caring. In 2006, an automated drip irrigation system was installed with a grant from EWEB obtained by SGP. This school composts their their cafeteria wastes in an Earth Tub managed by PE teacher David Babcock.

Churchill Community Garden:
Located behind Kennedy Middle School, 2200 Bailey Hill Rd, Eugene (4J District)
Churchill Community Garden is a 2-acre garden that combines community garden plots, a school garden area, and food production for the local food bank, FOOD for Lane County. School groups from Kennedy Middle School and Churchill High School work in the garden regularly.

Clear Lake Elementary School: 4646 Barger Dr, Eugene (Bethel District)
Clear Lake has been gardening with SGP since 2002. Currently, this is a small courtyard garden used by the students of teachers Marsha Barr, Meryni Hall, and Reanda Ferry. SGP and the UO Department of Landscape Architecture helped build new raised beds here in 2005 and 2006.

Corridor Elementary School: 250 Silver Ln, Eugene (4J District)
Corridor began working with SGP in the fall of 2004 to plan a garden in a courtyard on the south side of the building. They planted it in the spring of 2005 and are working with Yujin Gakuen Japanese Language Immersion School, with whom they share the building and the courtyard.

Cottage Grove High School: 1375 S. River Rd, Cottage Grove (South Lane District)
Under the leadership of science teacher Kelli Kaiser, this school became an SGP Member School in 2006 and began planning for a garden and composting area behind the science wing.

Danebo School:
1265 Candlelight Drive, Eugene (Bethel District)
Under the leadership of teacher Michelle Healey, this school is gardening in 10 raised beds. They grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers and do composting. They became an SGP Member School in 2006.

Eastside Elementary School:
3875 Kincaid, Eugene (4J District)
Eastside became an SGP Member School in 2005. Eastside had a small garden when it was at the Willard building. When Eastside moved to the Parker building, a new garden was started on the northern edge of the schoolyard in 2000. Under the leadership of parent volunteer Sharon Blick, the garden was greatly expanded and an automated drip irrigation system added in 2002-2003, and a deer fence was added in early 2004. SGP contributed a row of raspberry bushes and work party help. Over a ton of school cafeteria waste is being composted yearly in the Eastside Garden. The garden was included in the KLCC Garden Tour in 2006.

Edgewood School: 577 E 46th, Eugene (4J District)
This school began putting in a native plant area in 2005 under the leadership of teacher Julie Hulme. After they became an SGP Member School in 2005, we helped them hook up with neighbor Dave Kayfes, who is volunteering to help them start a composting program.

Eugene Waldorf School: 1350 McLean Blvd, Eugene (Non-profit Organization)
SGP helped the Waldorf School plan and move/expand their garden to its present prominent location near the parking lot and entrance to the school. Growing food is a big part of the Waldorf curriculum.

Fox Hollow French Immersion Elementary School: 5055 Mahalo Dr, Eugene (4J District)
Fox Hollow began working with SGP in fall 2003 to plan their garden, choosing a site east of the school building. Built in the spring of 2004, this round garden is surrounded by a deer fence and used by teacher Robin Chapell's class and an after school program led by parent volunteer Pete Barrell.

Gilham Elementary School: 3307 Honeywood, Eugene (4J District)
Gilham has been gardening with SGP since 2002. Teacher Beth Shershun's class tends a small garden on the east side of the building. In the fall of 2004, UO Landscape Architecture students, in conjunction with SGP, put in a native plant garden in a courtyard on the south side of the building.

Goshen School (K-8): 34020 B St, Goshen (Springfield District)
Goshen School worked with SGP founder Emily Dietzman to obtain a Toyota Tapestry grant in 2000 to start their garden. Since the beginning of SGP, we have worked with Goshen School to convert a barren hillside on the south side of the school into a terraced garden complete with flowers, vegetables, fruit trees, berry bushes, small ponds, rabbit hutches, a shed, and a greenhouse. Teacher Mary Larsen's middle school students are the main tenders of the garden.

Hamlin Middle School: 326 Centennial Blvd, Springfield (Springfield District)
Teacher Paul Cesmat got a grant from Weyerhauser to start a garden and put in a greenhouse in the fall of 2004.

Harris Elementary School: 1150 E 29th, Eugene (4J District)
Harris became an SGP Member School in 2005. Harris has had a small garden on the west side of the school since 1993 under the leadership of teacher Bobbie Reed.

Headstart of Lane County: 221 B St, Springfield (Public preschool program)
Head Start of Lane County became an SGP Member School in 2005. Under the leadership of local farmer John Sundquist, Headstart has put in small gardens at 11 of their Lane County program sites.

Madison Middle School: 875 Wilkes Dr, Eugene (4J District)
SGP put in three raised beds in their inner courtyard in the fall of 2002.

Meadow View Middle School: 1855 Legacy St, Eugene (Bethel District)
This garden was started with the help of SGP founder Emily Dietzman in 2000. The raised bed design was the inspiration for the SGP logo. The garden includes berry bushes, fruit trees, and native plants.

Martin Luther King Jr Educational Center: 2727 MLK Jr Blvd, Eugene (affiliated with Lane ESD)
MLK Jr Educational Center works with juvenile offenders to restore an Oak Savanna on site and soon will be starting a vegetable garden. MLK Jr Educational Center became an SGP Member School in 2005.

NW Youth Corps Outdoor High School: 2621 Augusta, Eugene (Non-profit organization)
This school has a 2 acre garden where former SGP Site Coordinator Jessica Hayes developed her garden management and instruction skills when she worked there for two years. SGP assisted the Outdoor High School garden in 2003-2004.

Oak Hill School: 86397 East Way Dr, Eugene (Private School)
Oak Hill School has been gardening for many years.

O'Hara Catholic School: 715 W. 18th Ave, Eugene (Private School)
Under the leadership of teacher Leticia Mout, this school began gardening in 2005. They have 8 large raised beds. They became an SGP Member School in 2006.

Ridgeline Montessori: 2855 Lincoln, Eugene (Public Charter School, 4J District)
Ridgeline has been gardening with SGP since the fall of 2004. Located in the former Willard School building, Ridgeline has fixed up the old Eastside garden and expanded it on the slope to the north of their wing of classrooms so that every classroom has a garden space.

River Road Elementary/El Camino del Rio: 120 W Hilliard Ln, Eugene (4J District)
Planning of the River Road garden began with SGP help in early winter 2002. By May, under the leadership of teacher Leia Hart, the garden had a teaching circle, five raised beds, orchard plantings and much more. In the fall of 2003, this garden's harvest was showcased at the SGP Harvest Festival attended by 150 people. Now the garden has many more raised beds, raspberries, and native plants. River Road also has an Earth Tub which makes compost for the garden out of cafeteria waste. This large garden is used by several classes, the BEST after school program, and the new Wildlife Stewards program.

Sheldon High School: 2455 Willakenzie Rd, Eugene (4J District)
With help from SGP, the Sheldon garden began in the fall of 2004 under the leadership of student Kyle Gerry. Their goal is to grow food to give away to feed hungry people in our community.

South Eugene High School: 400 E 19th, Eugene (4J District)
Teacher Julia Harvey's biology class has tended a garden since 2003 that includes food plants, flowers, and native plants. They became an SGP Member School in 2005.

Unity School: 580 N Garden Way, Eugene (Private School)
For 18 years, Unity School has been developing their large organic garden full of vegetables, fruit trees, flowers and herbs that is a learning center for the children and provides food for their meal program. Volunteers are welcome to work with their teachers and children in the garden. Unity School became an SGP Member School in 2005.

The Village School: 2855 Lincoln, Eugene (Public Charter School, 4J District)
In the fall of 2002, SGP helped to install five raised beds.

Walterville School (K-8): 40589 McKenzie Hwy, Walterville (Springfield District)
Walterville School has been gardening with SGP since the fall of 2003. Under the leadership of head teacher Sherrie Warthen, their garden has grown to include a butterfly garden, deer fence, pond, and raised beds for each classroom.

Wellsprings Friends School: 3590 W 18th, Eugene (private school)
Instructor Maggie Matoba of Healing Harvest renovated an existing garden on the east side of the school starting in 2005. They became an SGP Member School in 2006.
